Pacific Basin's Almasi Launches New Steel Import Route to Rotterdam
The Port of Rotterdam is solidifying its role as a key hub for steel imports from China, highlighted by the recent arrival of the bulk carrier Almasi. Docked at Broekman Logistics' breakbulk terminal in Heijplaat, this ship, chartered by the renowned Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin Shipping Ltd, marks a significant milestone as Rotterdam becomes the company's primary European entry point. The Almasi is carrying nearly 18,000 tonnes of steel products, which will be offloaded at both Broekman and JC Meijers terminals. This latest delivery is the fifth time in recent weeks that a vessel chartered by Pacific Basin has called at Rotterdam, reinforcing the company's strategic investment in this vital shipping lane. Looking ahead, another vessel is scheduled to arrive on January 10, set to transfer an additional 10,000 tonnes of steel products ship-to-ship at JC Meijers. Pacific Basin, one of the leading operators in the dry bulk shipping sector, is known for its modern fleet of Handysize and Supramax vessels. Despite facing current market challenges due to overcapacity, the company continues to expand, boasting a fleet of over 200 ships with plans to introduce 18 new dry bulk vessels between 2015 and 2017. Additionally, their foray into the breakbulk market exemplifies their commitment to growing services in this area. To facilitate operations in Rotterdam, Pacific Basin has enlisted Sinepol Shipping & Agency BV as their port and commercial agent. This new regular service aligns with the Port Authority’s vision of establishing Rotterdam as the premier breakbulk port in Western Europe, signaling an exciting era of growth and opportunity.
Medevac Operation for Crew Members Injured on Almasi near Columbia River
On February 5, 2015, a Coast Guard helicopter successfully executed a medevac operation for three crew members aboard the cargo vessel 'Almasi', situated 52 miles west of the Columbia River Bar. Reporting injuries consistent with chemical burns, along with a possible leg fracture, the crew members were in urgent need of medical assistance. The incident was reported to watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River at approximately 11:30 a.m. by Pacific Coast Maritime Agencies, which provides operational services for tanker and dry bulk vessels. The injuries occurred as the crew was engaged in refueling and cleaning the ship’s holds. Following the report, the 'Almasi' was initially positioned 69 miles from the Columbia River Bar but successfully coordinated a closer rendezvous point with the Coast Guard. By 1:42 p.m., the Jayhawk crew arrived on the scene, assessed the condition of the injured mariners, and hoisted all three to safety. They were then transferred at 3:09 p.m. to emergency medical services, who rushed them to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria for additional medical care. At the time of the medevac, challenging weather conditions were reported, with winds ranging from 31 to 38 mph and sea swells reaching 19 feet.
