Crew member fell over board

Apr 27, 2026 23:23

**Title: Search and Rescue Operation Underway After Crew Member Falls Overboard from Norwegian Breakaway** On April 26, 2026, a distressing incident unfolded off the coast of Massachusetts when a crew member aboard the Norwegian Breakaway fell overboard, instigating an extensive search and rescue (SAR) operation. The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m., 12 nautical miles from Cape Cod, as the ship made its way back to Boston following a week-long cruise to Bermuda. Security camera footage captured the heartbreaking moment when the crew member plunged into the icy waters. In response to the emergency, the Norwegian Breakaway's man overboard protocol was immediately initiated, prompting the launch of lifeboats to assist in the rescue efforts. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England dispatched a helicopter to the scene, while personnel from Coast Guard Station Provincetown joined the operation in hopes of locating the missing individual. Although another helicopter was deployed later that afternoon, the search was regrettably suspended by noon due to a lack of new information. Authorities remain vigilant and are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to monitor conditions and gather reports. The situation is a tragic reminder of the inherent risks faced by maritime crews. Cruise ship rescued distressed migrants

Aug 22, 2022 11:14

On the last day of a five-night sailing, the 'Norwegian Breakaway' assisted and rescued approximately 20 refugees from an overloaded boat in the North Atlantic. The bridge crew saw the boat, contacted the authorities, and brought the people aboard the cruise ship en route from the Port of Cozumel back to Miami, Florida, on Aug 18, 2022, approximately 30 miles west of Cuba. The cruise ship's captain, Andreas Karlstroem, assessed the situation and determined that the refugees could not remain in the small boat, which appeared to be overloaded with 20 or 30 people. One of rescue boats was launched and transferred the castaways aboard, which took approximately 3,5 hours. Once on board, the refugees received food, water and medical care as needed. The US Coast Guard (USCG) was notified of the situation as the rescue was in progress and took care of the refugees later.
