Ship abandoned after grounding near Sakarya
**Title: Abandoned Vessel Ninova Runs Aground Near Sakarya Amidst Severe Storm** On May 1, 2026, the cargo ship 'Ninova' experienced a loss of control due to extreme weather conditions, grounding just 85 meters from the coastline of Sakarya's Karasu district at approximately 9 a.m. The incident was triggered by a powerful storm that resulted in high waves causing the vessel to drag its anchor and subsequently run aground. In response to this maritime emergency, the Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM) promptly dispatched teams that included the Coast Guard, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency), police, and fire department personnel to secure the incident area and assess the situation. However, the adverse weather, characterized by heavy surf and strong winds accompanied by intermittent rainfall, hindered rescue operations from the water. Additionally, conditions were too perilous for a helicopter to airlift the stranded crew from the ship's deck. To facilitate a rescue, authorities opted to deploy a breeches buoy system. A guideline was successfully fired onto the Ninova, allowing the crew members to pull the heavy line and secure it. One by one, the eight sailors were rescued and brought safely to shore using this rope system. The 'Ninova', which has been operational since 2021, has a troubled history marked by safety concerns. Although sold in 2023, the current ownership and management details remain unclear. The vessel was banned by Italy in 2024 under the Paris MOU due to recurring safety violations and detentions. In June 2025, Russian authorities reported 18 deficiencies, followed by 30 deficiencies noted by Turkish inspectors in August, and an additional 17 deficiencies flagged by Russian inspections in October 2025. Prior to the grounding incident, the Ninova had departed from Novorossiysk and was anchored north of Turkey.
