Quick thinking pilot prevented worse after rudder loss near nclear power plants

May 05, 2026 12:57

**Title: Pilot's Swift Actions Avert Disaster After Rudder Failure Near Atucha Nuclear Power Plants** On April 24, 2026, at approximately 10 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Navios Celestial,' loaded with 43,000 tons of cargo, encountered a critical situation just three kilometers from the Atucha nuclear power plants located near Zárate, along the Paraná de las Palmas River. Having set sail from Arroyo Seco and heading towards Morocco, the vessel experienced a rudder loss due to a malfunction in the servo motor pump while navigating downstream near kilometer 138. As the vessel drifted dangerously close to the power plants, swift judgment from the pilot on watch proved essential in mitigating potential disaster. With less than ten minutes to react, he quickly summoned the ship's Captain, who was resting after the loading and docking procedures. The pilot took decisive action by alerting the crew through the general alarm and deploying personnel to the bow of the ship. Navigating the Paraná de las Palmas, known for its challenging bends and narrow channel, required immediate strategic maneuvers. The notorious Atucha Bend, notorious for its sharp curves, posed an imminent risk, especially without the ability to control the rudder. To prevent a collision, the pilot conferred with the Captain to engage full reverse thrust, effectively slowing the ship while leveraging the river’s current for maneuverability. With precise coordination, they used one of the anchors to execute a controlled turn, successfully bringing the 'Navios Celestial' to a halt close to the right bank, avoiding any damage to the vessel, its cargo, or the surrounding environment. Currently, the 'Navios Celestial' remains safely anchored as it awaits the results of a summary investigation by the Argentine Naval Prefecture and the necessary repairs to continue its voyage. The incident underscores the importance of quick thinking and teamwork in maritime safety.
