Russian icebreaker illegally crossed border to Estonia without permission
**Title: Russian Icebreaker 'Murmansk' Crosses Into Estonian Waters Without Authorization** On February 28, 2026, the Russian icebreaker 'Murmansk' made headlines for crossing the maritime boundary into Estonia's territorial waters near Vaindlo Island without the necessary permissions. The incident occurred while the vessel was engaged in operations to assist a tanker stranded in icy conditions. In a significant diplomatic response, Estonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concerns over the icebreaker's unauthorized entry, which took place without prior notification to either the Estonian Navy or the Ministry itself. The Russian ship neglected to respond to multiple radio communications, emphasizing the seriousness of the violation. In response to this breach, officials in Tallinn summoned the Chargé d'Affaires from the Russian Embassy to address the situation formally, delivering a diplomatic note that underscored the established regulations governing foreign vessels in Estonian waters. Estonia reminded the Russian Federation that while foreign vessels can exercise peaceful passage, they must provide notification through diplomatic channels at least 48 hours in advance of entry into territorial waters. Acknowledging the challenging ice conditions and the urgency to assist maritime traffic, Estonia expressed its willingness to expedite notifications for the icebreaker season, reducing the required notice period to just six hours. This incident highlights the delicate nature of maritime boundaries and the importance of adhering to established protocols, especially among nations within the EU and NATO framework.
