Egine room fire in Göhren
**Title: Engine Room Blaze Averts Excursion Departure in Göhren** On March 29, 2026, a potential disaster was averted as smoke began to billow from the exhaust vent on the port side of the sightseeing vessel "Mönchgut." This incident occurred shortly before the ship was set to embark on a scenic journey to the iconic chalk cliffs of Rügen at approximately 11:30 a.m., while docked at the Göhren/Rügen pier. The vessel was carrying 24 passengers and five crew members, all eager to enjoy a nine-hour excursion along the stunning coastline to the Kings Chair (Königsstuhl), with planned stops at Göhren, Sellin, and Binz. Upon noticing the smoke, the crew acted swiftly, evacuating all passengers for their safety and promptly notifying the local fire department. As they investigated further, crew members identified the source of the smoke in the engine room and discovered a fire localized around the exhaust vent. Initial attempts to extinguish the flames using a powder extinguisher proved ineffective. In a decisive move, the crew shut off the fuel supply to the engines and activated the vessel's onboard fire suppression system, flooding the engine room with carbon dioxide, which ultimately extinguished the fire. A crew from the water police was on hand to document the unfolding situation, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Following the incident, the maritime safety authority implemented a temporary sailing ban on the "Mönchgut," although they did grant permission for a one-time tow to a shipyard, facilitated by a tugboat. By 9:30 p.m. UTC on the same day, the vessel was towed to Peene Shipyard in Wolgast, arriving at 6 a.m. on March 30. Preliminary estimates suggest the fire caused damage around €10,000, prompting the cancellation of all scheduled trips for the time being. In response to the incident, Adler shipping company swiftly adjusted its schedules. Starting March 30, they resumed excursions to the chalk cliffs, operating trips on the vessel "Binz." New departure times were set for 11:00 a.m. from Göhren, 11:30 a.m. from Sellin, and 12:30 p.m. from Binz, allowing tourists to continue enjoying the natural beauty of Rügen while ensuring safety remains a priority.
Storm gust pushed ship aground
In the evening of Aug 3, 2017, the "Mönchgut" ran aground with 37 passengers off Freest. A storm gust with up to 117 km/h had pushed the ship out of the fairway. It was unable to get back with own power. The DGzRS lifeboat "Heinz Orth" was called to assist and pulled the ship back into deeper water. It was able to continue the voyage towards Peenemünde upon Usedom unassisted. There was no threat for passengers nor crew.
Möchsgut aground off Peenemünde
On June 19, 2015, the "Mönchsgut" first got off course and then stuck in the narrow fairway of the Peene. Winds pushed the ship onto the shallow so that it could not refloat with own means, and the lifeboat "Eugen" of the DGzRS Station Greifswalder Oie was called to assist. It managed to pull of the passenger ship within short time. It returned to Peenemünde then. None of the 16 passengers were injured.
