Svitzer was contracted for the removal of damaged containers from the "Eline Enterprise" in Darwin harbor. Some containers were filled with vessels containing ethylene gas which is flammable and can be violently explosive. The plan was first to remove all undamaged containers. The next step was then to get the damaged containers away from the ship safely. Several containers aboard the ship had moved, as the vessel sailed under very harsh and difficult weather conditions, 26 January.

Unloading of damaged gas containers delayed

Feb 08, 2012 09:01

The unloading of damaged gas containers from a ship in Darwin Harbour has stalled. The E-Line Enterprise has been anchored off the Darwin coast since containers on it were damaged in severe weather two weeks ago, leaking tonnes of explosive gases. Crews started moving the containers from the ship to barges on Monday in a process that was expected to take two days. But further contract negotiations between the ship's owner and the recovery operators today have stopped the unloading of the ship. The Darwin Port Corporation says it hopes the last of the containers will be unloaded tomorrow. http://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/unloading-damaged-gas-containers-delayed-050011805.html

Damaged containers stay put

Feb 04, 2012 10:20

The damaged gas containers aboard the "Eline Enterprise" in Darwin Harbour stayed put as recovery contracts were still being bashed out. Four 8.5-tonne ISO containers of flammable liquid ethylene gas were punctured in a storm. Darwin Port Corporation had hoped they would be removed Feb 4. The vessel has been anchored about 2 km southwest of Fort Hill Wharf, in the middle of Darwin Harbour, since Feb 3 morning. The ship was made to wait several kilometres north of Darwin for nine days with 11 crew and the captain aboard while the gas dissipated.
