One Calabrian crew member of the 'Messina' that shuttles between the Messina and Villa San Giovanni has been tested positive for coronavirus on March 26, 2020. The man had been in contact with his brother, who was also already positive on the test. 31 crew members have been confined at home for days. The last shift together was in the night of March 14, 2020. Soon after, the colleague began to experience the first symptoms. The confined crew members were asked to return on March 29.

On May 15, 2018, at 12:13 a.m, the Port Authority of Messina received a request for assistance from the ""Messina" after a man had fallen into the sea from the ferry about 500 meters from the port entrance.
