Surveys going on after refloating
Divers carried out an underwater inspection of the 'Med Cerkezkoy', which had run aground in pos. 36 25 18 N, 27 17 18 E off the western part of Tilos Island on Feb 24, under the supervision of attended class surveyor. Subsequently, the ballast tanks and other void spaces together with cargo compartments damage surveys were carried out by the surveyors. The incident statements by the crew were taken by the incident investigation desk of Harbour Master. The departure permission had yet to issued. The tug 'Pothitos II' (IMO: 9186572) remained on standby due to safety reasons and the port authoritie's further instructions at the inner anchorage of Tilos Island as of March 2.
Ship refloated and anchored
The 'Med Cerkezkoy', which had run aground en route from Piraeus to Lattakia west of Tilos, managed to refloat on Feb 25 with own power and proceeded to the Livadion area off Tilos, where it was anchored safely in pos. 36° 25' 03.1" N 027° 23' 40.3" E, accompanied by two patrol boats of the Greek Coast Guard and two tugs. A floating oil barrier was placed around the ship, and the tugs remained on standby. No marine pollution was observed.
Grounding off Tilos island
The 'Med Çerkezköy' with 16 Turkish crew members on board ran hard aground at the Akra Monastiri, which is located at the west side of Tilos island in the Datça district of Muğla, on Feb 24, 2023, at around 2 a.m. UTC, en route from Piraeus to Latakia. The sister ship 'Med Çorlu' interrupted its own voyage and was approaching the grounding site. Two vessels of the Greek Coastguard were on the scene of the incident,as well as the tugs "Christos XXV" and "Pothitos II", which also placed a floating barrier in the area, followed by a reef inspection by an authorized diver. No spill was reported. The weather on scene was calm. The Central Port Authority of Rhodes, which is conducting the preliminary investigation.
