Heroic Rescue: Bulk Carrier Aids Stranded Crew of Sinking Yacht
In a daring rescue operation, British skipper David Bowes, 61, a retired educator from Pocklington, East Yorkshire, and his two crew members were saved from their sinking yacht, the 15-meter sailing vessel "Destiny of Scarborough," more than 300 miles off the Azores. The crew had embarked on a journey from the British Virgin Islands back to Southampton when tragedy struck following a collision with a whale that left their yacht with significant hull damage. Initially, after assessing the situation, Bowes opted to continue their voyage, as the water ingress seemed minimal. However, as the night progressed, strange creaking sounds prompted Bowes to contact the Falmouth Coastguard. By the early hours of May 22, 2017, distress signals were sent out as water levels surged through newly formed cracks in the hull. The Portuguese rescue teams swiftly mobilized, dispatching two Air Force jets to monitor the troubled yacht and provide reassurance while awaiting the arrival of a naval vessel. The bulk carrier "Justice," traveling from Wilmington to Aviles, was the first to respond, maneuvering expertly to retrieve the stranded sailors. As the crew members made their way on board, the transfer was fraught with tension, with two-inch rope lines snapping under the strain as the yacht and bulk carrier moved awkwardly in the waves. When the final crew member was safely aboard, Bowes faced a critical decision as the two bow lines snapped, leaving him aboard the boat as it succumbed to the sea. He recounted that the water had risen above the cabin floorboards by the time he abandoned ship. Ultimately, the "Destiny of Scarborough" was left to sink approximately 350 miles from the Azores and farther from Portugal's mainland. The bulk carrier "Justice" successfully completed its journey, arriving in Aviles on May 25, 2017, with the crew safe and sound, thanks to the swift actions of the rescue teams.
