Maersk declared general average after cargo fire
The Danish shipping company Maersk has declared general average for the 'Marie Maersk'. The general average status means that all cargo interests with cargo on board the ship will have to contribute to the costs incurred and to be incurred to salvage the vessel. The 'Marie Maersk' had departed Rotterdam on Aug 4, and if the voyage had gone smoothly, the ship would have arrived in the port of Tanjung Pelepas on Sep 6, according to the original schedule. However, on Aug 13, smoke was seen billowing from several containers. The container ship didn't actually catch fire, but the crew, assisted by salvors, had to fight for almost two weeks to get the fire under control. On Aug 25, the 'Marie Maersk' was finally able to resume its voyage, while the exact extent of the damage remained unclear. On Sep 5, the ship was east of Africa, near Madagascar, and expected in Tanjung Pelepas on Sep 14t. All containers, both damaged and undamaged, will be unloaded in port so the ship can be cleaned and minor repairs can be carried out. Shippers with cargo on board were advised to contact their insurers as soon as possible to discuss the necessary next steps. The British marine insurer W. E. Cox Claims Group, which represents a number of affected shippers, including clients with both damaged and undamaged containers, emphasized that neither cargo destined for Tanjung Pelepas nor cargo awaiting transit to other destinations would be released until the general average insurance paperwork is in order. Cox was in close contact with Maersk to ensure the customers' containers get released promptly and damaged cargo can be inspected as quickly as possible.
Damaged containers to be unloaded in Cape Town
The 'Marie Maersk' was now headed to Cape Town, maintaining a speed of 17 knots and an ETA as of Aug 31. Still on board were the fire specialists who helped the crew get the fire under control, and who were now observing the containers in order to be able to intervene quickly if the fire flares up again. It was being expected that the damaged containers will be unloaded in Cape Town, and that the 'Marie Maersk' will then continue its voyage. Maersk has not yet decided whether the 'Marie Maersk's original destination - Tanjung Pelepas - would be maintained. In fact the ship dropped anchor off Cape Town and resumed the voyage the same day. As of Sep 3, the 'Marie Maersk' showed Tanjung Pelepas as destination with an ETA as of Sep 14.
Ship now headed to Cape Town
According to Maersk, the initial interventions of the crew of the 'Marie Maersk' and the offshore tugs have stabilized the fire, but specialized external teams have yet to embark to continue and intensify operations. The shipowner specified that the exact location of the fire on board, namely a container bay, would not be disclosed. The damage to the cargo has not yet been assessed. The company continued its efforts to identify a suitable port of refuge, but has not yet confirmed where the vessel will be directed. Some industry observers believed that the infrastructure available on the West African coast was limited to accommodate a container ship of this size and believed that a port such as Tangier Med could represent a more realistic option than continuing the initial rotation to Asia. The AIS destination given on Aug 25 was, however, Cape Town with an ETA as of Aug 31. Maersk has set up a crisis unit in constant contact with the crew to provide operational monitoring and psychological support. At this stage, no injuries have been reported on board the 'Marie Maersk'.
Marie Maersk underway again towards Gulf of Guinea
The 'Marie Maersk' has resumed sailing as it works to get additional help from shore in its efforts to extinguish the fire. One container, which has been flooded with water, still showed an elevated temperature while being under control. As of Aug 22, the 'Marie Maersk' was sailing eastwards into the Gulf of Guinea at a speed of 10 knots to rendezvous with another supply vessel with additional firefighting equipment, which will be loaded onboard. An external firefighting team had boarded the vessel on Aug 19. Together with the crew of the 'Marie Maersk', they held the fire under control, while it is still not completely extinguished. The expert Crisis Response Team of Maersk remained in constant touch with the vessel crew, the salvage operator, the flag state authority, and the classification society to take qualified decisions about the next steps. The port of destination was under contemplation, with the goal of finding the best solution for the crew, Maersk’s customers and their cargo. Due to the prevailing conditions in the affected cargo bays, the exact impact of the fire on each container was unknown. The expectation was that the ship will be taken to a port of refuge to offload the damaged containers and ascertain the full extent of the damage.
Container ship assisted by several tugs
The 'Marie Maersk' was still destined towards Tanjung Pelapas, assisted by the tugs 'Med Rigel' (IMO: 1048530) 'Captain Cat' (IMO: 1048528), and 'SL Loire' (IMO: 9190494), and the fire fighting offshore vessel 'Troms Hera' (IMO: 9732967). The status of 'restricted manoeverability' and a speed of 0,8 knots in pos. 04° 08' N 010° 35' W, suggested it was adrift as of Aug 18 with an ETA given as of Sep 6. While the ship was operating the AE4 service under the Gemini Cooperation, smoke was detected emanating from containers stowed on deck early on Aug 13. According to Maersk, the crew had responded swiftly, activating the onboard firefighting systems. All personnel were reported safe. The 'Captain Cat' and 'Med Rigel' had arrived on scene late on Aug 13, joining efforts coordinated by Dutch salvage firm SMIT, which has deployed additional resources to assist. The plan was for external firefighters to board the 'MArie Mersk' on Aug 18 and assist. It is not yet known whether they will be flown in or brought aboard by ship. Meanwhile, the 'Marie Maersk' has been diverted to receive shore support as quickly as possible. The port of call was not yet known. There was not yet an estimate about the extent of the fire's impact on the cargo.

DSME delivers EEE-type number four: MARIE MAERSK (18,270 teu)
Maersk Line is to take delivery this week of the 18,270 teu MARIE MAERSK from South Korea's DSME shipyard. The vessel is the fourth unit in the carrier's series of 20 ultra-large triple-E container ships and it will phase into Maersk's 'AE10' Far East to Europe and Baltic Sea service, where it is to replace the 15,500 teu EUGEN MAERSK. Before phase-in, the ship will perform a bunkering trip on Oct. 27 to Vostochniy to take advantage of the lower prices of heavy fuel oil in the Russian Northeast. In the EEE-type series, the MARIE MAERSK follows the MARY MAERSK, delivered in early September.
