Maranta Faces Three-Month Ban from Paris MOU Ports After Third Detention
The vessel 'Maranta' is facing a significant setback as it has been prohibited from accessing European ports for a duration of three months. This decision comes in the wake of the ship's repeated failure during crucial port state safety inspections. On December 5, 2024, 'Maranta' was detained in Venice due to a staggering 14 deficiencies, with four categorized as serious. Key issues included a malfunctioning machinery control alarm, inadequate fire prevention measures, and various problems in machinery spaces. This incident marks the third detention of the vessel within the Paris MOU region over the last three years. Previously, 'Maranta' was also held at ports in Naples and Ravenna on two different occasions in 2022. Following its 12-day detention in Venice, the ship departed on December 18, and is currently heading towards Altinova, where it is scheduled to stay from December 23 to December 30.
Resumption of Shipping Activity in Ukraine's Black Sea Ports
On October 27, 2023, the Ukrainian Black Sea ports in the Odesa region witnessed a flurry of activity as four vessels set sail, marking the resumption of shipping operations through a newly established export corridor. The vessels 'Propus', 'Iasos', 'Gloria G', and 'Manassa Queen' departed from the ports in Odesa, while the tanker 'Mavka', bulk carrier 'Golden Arrow', and 'Maranta' were en route to Ukrainian ports. This resurgence in shipping comes after a temporary three-day pause due to reported concerns over potential threats from Russian aircraft and naval mines, as indicated by the Kiev-based consultancy Barva Invest, British security firm Ambrey, and Ukrainian Ports. However, these claims were dismissed by Ukrainian officials. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reiterated on October 27 that the corridor would remain operational despite the ongoing risks. This corridor is vital for Ukraine's efforts to revive its maritime exports amidst continued threats from Russia, which had previously terminated a UN-sanctioned deal in July that allowed designated food exports amid the ongoing conflict. As of October 26, 23 vessels were loading cargo at the Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi ports. Since the inception of the export corridor, a total of 51 vessels have navigated through, successfully transporting over 1.3 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products and other goods.
