Ten Syrian crew members of abandoned ship paid and repatriated
Ten Syrian crew members of the 'MAr 4' flew home from Cyprus on Oct 8, 2025, after five months stranded on the abandoned ship. with all their wages with Christiana Efstratiou, the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF)’s Cypriot inspector, having been instrumental in getting the seafarers wages paid and repatriation arranged. The court order to pay the seafarers was announced on the morning of Oct 8, just as the ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton was telling the delegates at the Cyprus Maritime Conference that this year the number of abandoned crew increased to around 300. Regarding the 'Mar 4', owned by Mar Marine Shipping LLC and managed by Haykal Ship Management both of the same address in Istanbul, Efstratiou had secured a pay increase for the underpaid crew. At the time the vessel was moored off Larnaca, before it sailed to the Cyprus’ facility at Vassiliko, where it has damaged telecommunications cables and was duly arrested. With the vessel no longer trading, the owner abandoned the ship, leaving the crew stranded on board without pay for five months. Letters to the Tanzanian registry proved fruitless, with no response to either the ITF or the Admiralty Marshall. The ship was sold by public auction in Limassol on Sep 19, according to an order of the Supreme Court of Cyprus in its Admiralty Jurisdiction. The appraised value of the vessel was 450.000 Euro. The income from its sale resulted in the payment and repatriation of the crew. The 'Mar 4' case was a good example of the authorities and the union working together to protect the rights of seafarers and an example of the effectiveness of collaboration between the various political, employer/industrial and working groups who working together can help to protect seafarers from the increasingly challenging world in which they work. The 'Mar 4' remained moored in pos. 34° 43' N 033° 21 E as of Oct 10. Report with photo: https://cyprusshippingnews.com/2025/09/12/mv-mar-4-imo-9038426-notice-of-sale-by-public-auction/
