Confrontation at Scarborough Shoal: Philippine Supply Ship Sustains Damage from Water Cannon Attack

Sep 17, 2025 10:48

On September 16, 2025, the Philippine supply mission to the contentious waters of the South China Sea near Scarborough Shoal faced a significant confrontation. The BRP 'Datu Gumbay Piang' (IMO: 1104827) was targeted by Chinese Coast Guard vessels, utilizing water cannons that resulted in notable damage to the Filipino ship. The mission, organized by the Philippines Coast Guard in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, aimed to resupply over 35 Filipino fishing vessels operating in the area. During this operation, the 'Datu Gumbay Piang,' along with three other Coast Guard vessels and two supply boats, delivered crucial fuel and ice to local fishermen. Tensions heightened as China conducted live-fire military drills in proximity to the shoal, leading to interactions between the vessels early in the morning. Initial encounters took place approximately 17 nautical miles from Scarborough Shoal, where a China Coast Guard vessel unleashed a 29-minute barrage of water cannon fire upon the Filipino ship. As the situation escalated, additional vessels from the Chinese fleet engaged the 'Datu Gumbay Piang,' with one ship beginning to deploy water cannons 17 miles from the shoal and another blocking the Filipino vessel at a distance of just 10 miles. The aggressive actions resulted in significant damage to the 'Datu Gumbay Piang,' including shattered windows on the bridge, destruction of the captain's cabin, and electrical malfunctions caused by flooding from the water cannons. A sailor on board suffered injuries from the glass debris. Despite the harrowing encounter, the ship managed to regroup with its fleet and successfully completed the resupply mission. On October 29, 2022, the fishing vessel 'Kunimatus 3' met with disaster as it capsized in the waters surrounding Manila Bay. The Philippine Coast Guard swiftly responded, successfully rescuing all five crew members aboard, who were found to be in good health following the incident.
