Container ships in collision off Chattogram

May 05, 2026 10:01

**Title: Container Ship Collision Near Chattogram Port: An In-Depth Look at the Incident** On May 1, 2026, at precisely 9:30 a.m., the container vessel 'Maersk Chattogram', which was navigating from Port Klang, collided with the container ship 'HR Turag' (IMO: 9175779), en route from Singapore. This unfortunate allision took place in the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port, prior to the commencement of the piloting procedure. The incident unfolded as the 'Maersk Chattogram' attempted to maneuver around the anchored 'HR Turag', resulting in a collision where the stern of the 'Maersk Chattogram' made contact with the starboard side of the 'HR Turag.' In the aftermath, the 'Maersk Chattogram' was subsequently guided to the JCB jetty within the outer port on the morning of May 3, while the 'HR Turag' remained stationed at coordinates 22° 10' N, 091° 47' E. To facilitate the safe arrival of the 'Maersk Chattogram' at port, local authorities established a controlled navigation corridor from the estuary to the New Mooring Container Terminal, which necessitated a temporary halt of general vessel movement. Both vessels were escorted by three tugs each, with extra support on standby, while operations were conducted under the vigilant oversight of the Vessel Traffic Management System. This precautionary measure was critical given the economic ramifications, as numerous import containers had been delayed since the incident on May 1. In total, both ships were carrying around 2,900 import containers; the 'Maersk Chattogram' held 1,878 containers, while the 'HR Turag' transported roughly 1,000. Although plans were in place for unloading these containers, both vessels were prohibited from taking on new export shipments as they now required inspections and repairs to ensure seaworthiness following the collision. The impact resulted in damage to the aft section of the 'Maersk Chattogram', compromising a section of the external hull on the starboard side above the waterline, although both the engine and steering gear remained intact. In response to this incident, Maersk Bangladesh has indicated that decisions regarding the next steps for the vessels will be made post-unloading. Safety protocols have been heightened, with additional tugs kept on standby for any future contingencies. The Mercantile Marine Department has initiated a thorough investigation into the collision, forming a three-member committee tasked with submitting a report within seven working days. Furthermore, a joint investigation committee has been established by the Department of Shipping in collaboration with the Ministry of Shipping to ensure comprehensive oversight.
