On September 17, 2010, the fishing vessel 'Keltic,' identified by IMO number 8015855, experienced a catastrophic fire in its engine room, leaving its 13 crew members stranded and powerless. The Shetland Coastguard sprang into action just before 10 a.m., coordinating a rapid response to the emergency. While the crew activated onboard firefighting systems to suppress the blaze, the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Sunburgh and the Lerwick RNLI Lifeboat swiftly maneuvered toward the vessel's distress location, approximately 30 nautical miles due east of Lerwick. As conditions worsened with force 7 winds, the Scottish Fishery Patrol Vessel Hirta also navigated to assist. Once the fire was successfully extinguished, the RNLI Lifeboat commenced towing the 'Keltic' back to the safety of Lerwick, showcasing the remarkable coordination and bravery of the rescue teams involved in this maritime emergency.
