Cruise ship went adrift due to bollard failure
On March 31, the 'Koningsdam', docked at the port of San Francisco, broke loose from its moorings after a pier bollard failed completely after securing the bow lines. The failure caused the vessel to drift and a gangway to detach. Crew members acted swiftly, utilizing thrusters and dropping anchor to stabilize the ship and prevent a potential allision with another pier. Given the strong winds, the decision was made to run thrusters to hold the ship firmly against the dock.
Passenger with multiple strokes medevaced off Honolulu
The US Coast Guard medevaced a passenger. who hjad experienced multiple strokes, from the 'Koningsdam', while the ship was sailing 300 miles off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on Feb 27, 2025. Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu watchstanders received notification on Feb 26 at 2:48 p.m. from the cruise ship, reporting that a 72-year-old man experienced multiple stroke episodes stroke episodes off Hawaii. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac within 20 hours. On Feb 27 at 9 a.m. an HC-130 Hercules airplane and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point rendezvoused with the 'Koningsdam' about 57 miles south of Honolulu. The helicopter hoisted the ailing man from the cruise ship and transported the patient to Queenโs Medical Center in Honolulu. The man was in stable condition. The US Coast Guard medically evacuated a 66-year-old woman from the 'Koningsdam' approximately 280 miles south of the U.S. and Mexico maritime boundary on Nov 29, 2024. At 7:12 a.m., Coast Guard watchstanders received a notification from the cruise ship, requesting the medevac for the woman who was experiencing symptoms of a stroke. A Coast Guard Air Station San Diego MH-60 Dolphin helicopter crew and Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento C-27 crew launched to assist. The two aircrews arrived at the 'Koningsdam', where the crew from Air Station Sacramento coordinated communications and the crew from Air Station San Diego hoisted the patient aboard the helicopter. The helicopter transported the patient to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in San Diego where she was reported to be in stable condition.
