Ferry under quarantine after people aboard tested positive for COVID 19

Apr 16, 2020 09:05

The KM 'Kelud' was put under quarantine upon its arrival in Belawan Port in Medan on April 13, 2020, after some passengers and crew members tested positive for COVID-19. A task force has worked on coordination with Pelni and the Belawan Port Health Office (KKP) to conduct health checks aboard the ship and coordinating with the KKP, Pelindo and Medan health office in the health check process. The ferry, carrying 111 passengers, departed Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta before it anchored at Batu Ampar Port in Batam City. As many as 31 passengers left the ship at Batu Ampar Port, while 44 others are scheduled to disembark at Tanjung Balai Karimun, and 36 passengers at Belawan Port. A crew member tested positive for COVID-19, after it conducted rapid tests for the virus as the ship anchored at the port on April 12. Further testings showed that 39 other crew and passengers also tested positive for COVID-19. 39 people were evacuated to Galang Special Infectious Disease Hospital. The ship has canceled its planned route, including calling at Tanjung Balai Karimun Port in Riau Islands, and instead proceeded to Belawan Port.

Ferry ran aground

Jun 02, 2016 09:33

The "KM Kelud" ran aground in the Singapore Strait on June 1, 2016, around 11 a.m. while approaching Sekupang port in Batam, Riau Islands. The vessel with 714 passengers on board got stuck on a sandbar in rough weather with heavy rain and strong wind gusts en route from Belawan to Batam. It stranded off the fairway and developed a list. Passengers panicked when the ship attempted to push through mud and reef just off Batam's Sekupang Harbour and ran aground after it was trapped in the muddy, shallow waters that are dotted with reefs. The State-owned shipping company, PT Pelni, immediately dispatched smaller ships to bring food and aid, so panic among the passengers aboard the vessel eventually subsided. Around 4.30 p.m. when the high tide returned the ferry refloated and resumed its approach to Batam. She finally docked at 5.40 p.m.
