Castaways of Atlantic Chager on their way home
The crew of the sunken f/v "Atlantic Charger" was expected in Harbour Grace on Sep 29, being actually aboard the “Kathsheshuk II" aafter their transfer from the Greenlandic f/v "Paamiut" in the morning of Sep 21. The "Paamiut" was the first vessel able to reach them after the "Atlantic Charger", laden with turbot, was stricken in the waters of Frobisher Bay near Resolution Island and Iqaluit in Nunavut. The fishermen were fishing turbot in Davis Strait, near Nunavut when the vessel started taking on water. It put out a call for help around noon, and within 10 minutes they were climbing into their liferaft. The crew spent hours on the rough sea near the mouth of Frobisher Bay. Most of them lived on New World Island, but they fished out of Twillingate. A maritime CP 140 patrol aircraft, on its way to Iqaluit, had been the first aircraft on scene after the distress call on Sep 20 after the fishing vessel was sinking 200 kilometres southeast of Baffin Island. Shortly after takeoff from Greenwood Canadian Forces Capt. Jennifer Bass picked up a call from the Joint Rescue Command Centre in Halifax. The plane spotted flares set off by the crew. An Aurora surveillance plane travelled for about three and a half hours before spotting the foundering vessel in the Atlantic Ocean. The crew saw the ship listing to starboard and the back sunk. When they came back again, it was totally submerged. The orange raft was bobbing in the water as a crew member had put up a yellow flag. Shortly after, a search and rescue Hercules from Greenwood was on scene and was able to drop a radio to them at 2:30 a.m. The Hercules then dropped a bundle of supplies for the crew. The cargo ship "Arctic", a bulk ore carrier, arrived on scene next about half an hour before the fishing vessel ultimately pulled the crew aboard. She was having difficulty conducting the rescue just because of the large size of the vessel and, as well, with the sea conditions.
