Ferry suffered exhaust and turbocharger issues

May 18, 2026 22:48

**Title: 'Isle of Lewis' Encounters Technical Challenges with Exhaust and Turbocharger** On May 15, the ferry 'Isle of Lewis', which operates the Ullapool-Stornoway route, experienced a significant setback due to an exhaust problem, resulting in operational delays. Once the issue was addressed, the vessel announced it would add an extra service, with a departure from Stornoway at 10:30 a.m. and a return from Ullapool at 2:30 p.m. However, on May 16, further problems arose when a technical malfunction involving the turbocharger led to the cancellation of the extra sailings that had been previously scheduled. As a result, the 'Isle of Lewis' remained docked in Stornoway from May 17 onwards. Fortunately, on May 18, the crew managed to resolve the complications with the starboard main engine. This allowed the ferry to resume its service, and the 2:30 p.m. sailing from Ullapool was successfully conducted, albeit with a slight delay, departing at 3 p.m. The vessel continues to be a vital link for travelers on this scenic route.

Additional steelwork needed during maintenance

Feb 25, 2026 13:23

**Title: Essential Steelwork Delays 'Isle of Lewis' Service Amid Maintenance Updates** CalMac has officially announced that the 'Isle of Lewis' will undergo significant steelwork repairs, prompting a reassessment of service deployment plans from early March through the end of May. This decision comes after the discovery of steel deterioration atop a fuel tank, which has been deemed critical for obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals for the vessel's return to operational status. Unfortunately, the option for temporary repairs has been deemed unfeasible. The drydock team has indicated that the duration of these essential repairs could extend up to three months. To facilitate this maintenance, fuel has already been drained from the tank, and a variety of equipment—including the sewage treatment plant, ballast pumps, fire pumps, and their associated pipework—must be removed to allow for the steel renewal process. The timeline for service resumption will also be impacted by the need to reinstall and commission this equipment after repairs are completed. As a result, the 'Isle of Lewis' will remain out of service for the remainder of the winter, stretching into the beginning of the summer schedule. The vessel's overhaul will coincide with the planned maintenance periods for other ferries, including the 'Hebrides' (February 27 - April 13), the 'Loch Frisa' (March 16 - April 7), and the 'Finlaggan' (April 20 - May 8). In more positive news, the 'Caledonian Isles' has successfully resumed operations this week, offering five daily round trips between Ardrossan and Brodick. Additionally, major works on the 'Glen Sannox' are nearing completion, ensuring continued service reliability for CalMac's fleet.
