A polar bear recently has visited the "Hydrograf" for half an hour dealing with a waste container. The ship was anchoring in the Wahlenbergfjord of Spitsbergen. A cartographer Jim was the first to discover the stowaway. He woke up the captain and then the whole team. The bear was particularly interested in our trash containers, but he also climbed on one of the boats and broke an antenna. The bear was not chased because all were safe on the bridge and could watch the spectacle in silence. The bear was no stranger to the team. For five days he had watched the ship from the shore, until the curiosity - and probably also the hunger - has finally won. Zoologists estimated of its size that he is three years old. Although the bear obviously was hungry, he looked well fed.
