Engine room fire in Kiel

May 05, 2026 11:37

**Title: Quick Action Prevents Disaster: Engine Room Fire Averted on Humber Sprinter in Kiel** On May 1, 2026, at approximately 5:40 p.m., an emergency situation unfolded aboard the cargo vessel 'Humber Sprinter' while it was docked in the locks of the Kiel Canal, Kiel-Holtenau. The ship, which was making its way from Riga to Immingham, experienced a fire in its engine room, specifically originating from a generator. Fortunately, no smoke or flames were visible externally. The vessel's crew promptly took action against the fire, using fire extinguishers to combat the flames. Their initial response proved effective, successfully dousing the flames before the situation escalated. However, due to uncertainties surrounding the fire's severity, the local fire department deployed its state-of-the-art fireboat 'FĂĽerschip', alongside crews from the North and Main stations, to the scene. Once firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, entered the engine room for a thorough inspection, they confirmed the fire was completely extinguished around 6:40 p.m. Consequently, the firefighters cleared the area, ensuring safety as one of the lock chambers was temporarily closed during the incident. Following the incident, the freighter was relocated to the North Harbour, where it docked at Voith Quay pending investigations by police. The German Maritime Professional Association subsequently issued a sailing ban on the vessel until it underwent further inspection and classification confirmation. After completing necessary repairs and safety checks, the 'Humber Sprinter' set sail from Kiel on May 5, with an estimated time of arrival at its destination port on May 6.
