Abandoned at Sea: Sailors of Palmali Company Face Unyielding Hardships
Following a year of dedicated service, crew members of various vessels owned by the Turkish shipping firm Palmali are enduring an agonizing situation as they await wages that have been unjustly withheld. Included among these stranded ships is the 'Caspian Mariner', currently docked in Istanbul. Other affected vessels include the 'Agdash', situated at the Suez Canal Anchorage, and the 'Captain Nagdaliyev', which is in Beirut. Assistance has been provided to the crews of both the 'Captain Nagdaliyev' and 'Agdash' by an ITF coordinator. The 'Agdash' faces additional issues, as its registration and insurance certificates have expired. The conditions on the 'Captain Nagdaliyev' have reached a critical point, with only one ton of drinking water left on board. Nevertheless, the crew remains committed to their responsibilities despite the dire circumstances, while their families back home have been left in financial distress for several months. The plight of the 'Captain Nagdaliyev' is particularly precarious. Since May 12, 2020, the tanker has been held in custody due to outstanding debts owed by Palmali, including significant unpaid amounts for bunker fuel. The situation has left the maritime employees in a state of limbo, as they have completed their contracts but are forced to remain on board for an extended period of 4 to 10 months without compensation. The sailors have also faced threats and intimidation, with reports of being coerced into signing false payroll documents. Meanwhile, the 'Caspian Mariner' is awaiting much-needed repairs while docked at the Port of Yalova. The crew suffers under uncomfortably high temperatures, with air conditioning and fans that remain non-functional, recording highs of more than 30 degrees Celsius during the day and 28-30 degrees at night. These brave sailors have worked tirelessly only to be met with neglect and lack of support from their employer. Their resilience and dedication amid such adversity highlight a troubling trend within the maritime industry, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
