Crude Oil Transfer from Damaged 'Stena Primorsk' Begins at Albany Port
The Port of Albany is currently facilitating the transfer of crude oil from the damaged tanker 'Stena Primorsk.' On the morning of December 24, 2012, the first of three barges departed the port, filled with crude oil extracted from the compromised vessel. According to Rich Hendrick, the port's general manager, the total of 280,000 barrels aboard the 'Stena Primorsk' will require approximately three barges for complete transport. The tanker, which embarked on its maiden voyage from the Buckeye Partners terminal, was intended to transport crude oil from the Bakken field in North Dakota to the Irving Oil Co. refinery located in St. John, New Brunswick.
Stena Primorsk Awaits Coast Guard Approval to Lighter Cargo in Albany
On December 22, 2023, the tanker 'Stena Primorsk' is in a holding pattern, eagerly waiting for clearance from the Coast Guard to transfer its cargo to a barge or another vessel. This situation has positioned the tanker to potentially remain docked in Albany for several additional days. Ultimately, it is scheduled to journey downstream for repairs in the New York City vicinity. The vessel commenced its operations on December 20, embarking on what is expected to be a regular route, transporting fuel sourced from the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota. Its journey along the Hudson River was interrupted when the tanker suffered a significant breach in its outer hull. Safe Transit of Breached Tanker Stena Primorsk to Albany
On the evening of December 21, Coast Guard Sector New York, in collaboration with several partner agencies, successfully guided the Stena Primorsk to Buckeye Albany Terminals LLC in Albany, New York. This operation followed a thorough structural assessment of the vessel to confirm its seaworthiness. The Stena Primorsk was transporting light crude oil southbound on the Hudson River when a hull breach was reported. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, alongside New York State Police aircrews, conducted aerial surveys of the river, ensuring no pollution incidents were detected and confirming that there were no injuries related to the breach. The cause of the hull breach is currently under investigation. To ensure safety during the incident, Coast Guard Sector New York implemented a safety zone around the vessel, extending from Matthew Point to the northern tip of Rattlesnake Island, temporarily restricting vessel traffic in the area. Fortunately, vessel traffic on the Hudson River has since resumed for both northbound and southbound routes.
