Storm Chaos: 'Ever Feat' Faces Container Crisis Off Brazilian Coast

Jul 30, 2025 12:32

On July 29, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Ever Feat' experienced a dramatic incident as it sailed towards Montevideo after departing from Navegantes. The ship docked with significant damage to two of its container bays, resulting in the perilous positioning of 30 to 40 containers that were either crushed, bent, or dislodged due to severe weather conditions near Rio Grande do Sul. Among the casualties were at least two 40-foot containers hanging precariously over the port side of the ship, creating an imminent risk of them falling into the sea. Structural assessments revealed twisted lashing bars, crushed container walls, and distorted deck fittings. Immediate efforts commenced to secure the remaining cargo so that the vessel could resume its journey. The National Port Authority (ANP) took charge of coordinating the necessary actions, working closely with the shipping line and port operators. In light of the hazardous materials contained within the cargo, which included fertilizers deemed toxic or polluting, the Coast Guard issued a series of recommendations for safe container handling. Cargo management was overseen by the Monteco company, while the possibility of containers lost at sea remains unclear. In response to the container damage, clients activated their insurance policies, prompting the implementation of containment and cleanup protocols alongside a thorough review of the cargo. Preliminary findings suggested that the container collapse was a result of extreme rolling and pitching of the vessel, potentially surpassing its stability limits. On July 30, surveyors from the classification society boarded the 'Ever Feat' to evaluate hull integrity, inspect for leaks of hazardous materials, and assess the condition of the damaged lashing equipment.
