Sanctioned shadow tanker may not leave port

Apr 15, 2026 11:49

**Title: 'Ethera' Remains Stuck in Zeebrugge Amid Ongoing Investigations** The vessel 'Ethera' is currently unable to depart from Zeebrugge due to a ruling by the Ghent Commercial Court, which has deemed the owner's and crew's appeal for departure unfounded. This tanker has been identified as part of Russia's shadow fleet and is included on the European Union's sanctions list. Linked to Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of a former senior advisor to the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the 'Ethera' faces serious scrutiny. The Belgian Army intercepted the tanker on the night of February 28, 2023. Following this operation, the vessel was escorted to Zeebrugge for further investigation, which is still ongoing. In a recent bid to secure temporary permission to leave the port, the ship’s owner and crew cited alleged violations of international laws by Belgian authorities. They sought a financial penalty of €10,000 per day for every day the 'Ethera' is held in port. However, the court ruled that releasing the vessel could lead to its permanent departure into international waters, undermining the Belgian State's authority. While the court has temporarily lifted the judicial seizure based on the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office's request, this decision has not changed the status of the tanker as it remains under administrative seizure. The ship's release is contingent upon payment of a significant security deposit of €10,020,000 and completion of a new inspection. As it stands, crew members remain aboard the 'Ethera', and the ship is effectively trapped. The owner has initiated legal proceedings against the Belgian State, but no verdict has been reached thus far. Furthermore, authorities have discovered that the tanker was operating under a false flag, with some of its documentation determined to be invalid or forged. Notably, the 'Ethera' has lacked registration since August 22, 2025. Initially, the tanker was on a route from Morocco to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Investigation into the tanker in its final phase

**Title: Investigation into Tanker 'Ethera' Moves to Final Stages Following Judicial Seizure** The legal hold on the tanker 'Ethera,' docked in Zeebrugge since March 18, has been lifted at the request of the Federal Prosecutor's Office. This vessel has been under scrutiny due to its ties with the Russian shadow fleet and its listing on the European Union's sanctions roster. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that the investigation into the 'Ethera' is nearing its conclusion. Initially, the tanker was sailing under the flag of Guinea; however, inspections onboard revealed that it is likely a false flag operation. Investigators discovered several ship documents that raised suspicions of forgery. Consequently, the ship was subjected to judicial seizure. During the initial inspections, authorities identified around 40 deficiencies, alongside several potentially counterfeit certificates. The maritime police and the Directorate-General for Shipping have interrogated both the captain and an engineer as part of the investigation. In addition to these inquiries, a range of documents and data storage devices were confiscated for further scrutiny. As this preliminary criminal investigation approaches its final phase, the findings will be forwarded to the Directorate-General for Shipping, which will proceed based on the outcomes of this inquiry. The ongoing investigation into the 'Ethera' underscores the rigorous efforts by European authorities to enforce maritime laws and maintain stringent oversight on vessels associated with sanctions violations.

Owner takes legal action against Belgian state to escape bond

**Title: Legal Battle Begins: Owner of 'Ethera' Challenges Belgian Government Over €10 Million Bond** In a significant legal development, the owner of the tanker 'Ethera' has initiated a court case against the Belgian government in a bid to contest a hefty €10 million bond imposed on the vessel. This legal confrontation comes in the wake of the ship's interception by the Belgian military during Operation Blue Intruder on March 1. Since that date, the 'Ethera' has been docked at the port of Zeebrugge. The tanker, which is reportedly associated with Russia’s “shadow fleet,” was found to have 45 deficiencies during an inspection conducted by officials. Among the issues were fraudulent certificates related to the ship operating under a Guinean flag, in addition to various technical failings. As a result of these findings, the Belgian authorities mandated the bond of €10,020,000, holding the vessel until the bond is settled and a subsequent inspection verifies compliance with maritime regulations. The owner is now challenging this decision, asserting that the boarding of the 'Ethera' was unlawful and seeking the immediate release of the ship. Belgian justice officials noted that such a legal challenge was anticipated, especially given the substantial financial implications involved. As the case unfolds, the 'Ethera' remains under judicial seizure in Zeebrugge, with the owner exploring every legal avenue to avoid the bond repayment.

Tanker seized with 45 defiencies after being raided

**Title: 'Ethera' Oil Tanker Seized in Belgium Following Major Safety Violations and False Registration** On March 3, Belgium announced the conclusion of its inspection of the oil tanker 'Ethera,' revealing serious infractions. The vessel was found to be operating under a false flag, lacking essential certifications, and committing numerous safety breaches. Notably, the 'Ethera' was purchased in 2024 by the son of a high-ranking advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, whose father was reportedly killed in airstrikes on March 1, as well as the Supreme Leader himself. The United States had already sanctioned the vessel in July 2025 due to its connections with Iran and for allegedly transporting Russian oil in contravention of international sanctions. The Belgian ministers of Justice and Mobility confirmed that the 'Ethera' was operating without valid registration or proper documentation, with inspectors identifying a staggering total of 45 deficiencies related to the ship's technical standards. As a consequence of these findings, the tanker has been ordered to pay a hefty fine of €10,020,000. Furthermore, it will remain detained in Zeebrugge until the owner can demonstrate compliance with flag state requirements and obtain the necessary certificates. A subsequent inspection will be conducted to ensure all safety deficiencies have been addressed. At the time of the inspection, the crew aboard comprised 21 members, including a Russian captain and seven officers—three from India, three from Georgia, and one from Indonesia—along with 13 crew members, all hailing from India. The crew has been mandated to stay aboard the vessel until it receives clearance to leave. This seizure reflects Belgium's commitment to enforcing European sanctions and safeguarding the North Sea. The duration of the detention will largely depend on the vessel's owner. The 'Ethera' is set to remain in port until the fine is settled and compliance is verified through the next inspection.

Inspection of tanker underway

Mar 03, 2026 11:58

**Title: Ongoing Investigation into Tanker 'Ethera' in Zeebrugge** **Content:** Authorities continue to probe the tanker 'Ethera' docked in Zeebrugge amid suspicions it may belong to Russia's shadow fleet. A coordinated effort involving the maritime police and various other agencies is underway to perform thorough inspections of the vessel. Technicians are assessing whether the tanker complies with all operational regulations necessary for navigation in the Belgian sector of the North Sea. Crew safety measures are also a top priority, with all 21 crew members currently confined to the ship. They are prohibited from disembarking, as their documentation is under scrutiny by the Immigration Office due to suspicions surrounding their presence in Belgium. The future of the 'Ethera,' along with its crew, hinges on identified regulatory breaches. Notably, should it be confirmed that the vessel is involved in illegal operations, it faces a hefty fine of up to 10 million euros for sailing under a false flag. Conversely, if the penalty is deemed excessive, outright abandonment of the ship could occur. However, sources indicate that the 'Ethera' remains in good condition, potentially exceeding the value of the levied fine. Thus, upon resolution of the financial issues, there is a strong likelihood that the tanker will be permitted to continue its operations.

Shadow fleet tanker seized

**Title: Belgian-French Coalition Seizes Shadow Fleet Tanker 'Ethera' in Operation Blue Intruder** In a significant maritime security operation, the Belgian Armed Forces, supported by French Defense, have effectively boarded and captured the 'Ethera,' a vessel associated with Russia's so-called "shadow fleet." The tanker was reportedly maneuvering under a complex network of sanctions and false flags to evade international oil price restrictions. This initiative, named "Operation Blue Intruder," saw the deployment of 93 Belgian soldiers alongside two French helicopters. The operation commenced around midnight local time, intercepting the product tanker as it sailed along the Moroccan coast, purportedly en route to Russian oil terminals in the Baltic Sea. Official communications indicated that the ship was “awaiting orders” at the time of capture. The operator of the 'Ethera', a Dubai-based company with connections to Iran, faced UK sanctions as early as 2024 due to its involvement in the transportation of Russian oil, which were later expanded to include the vessel itself in 2026. Additionally, the European Union imposed sanctions on the tanker in 2025, with the United States following suit as part of a broader initiative to target elite Iranian figures in July 2025. The 'Ethera' is connected to operatives of Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, linked to Ali Shamkhani, a senior advisor to the Supreme Leader of Iran. Ali Shamkhani was reportedly among those eliminated during the initial phases of Israel's “Roaring Lion” operation against Iran on February 28. His son, Hossein, is believed to manage a fleet of around 40 tankers and various enterprises implicated in transporting oil and petroleum products from Iran and Russia to global markets, amassing profits spanning billions of dollars. With sanctions enacted by the EU, UK, and US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the 'Ethera' is also tied to Fractal Marine DMCC, an Emirati firm recognized for its role in circumventing international energy sanctions. After being redirected from its intended path, the tanker was escorted safely into the Port of Zeebrugge on March 1, 2026, docking around 8 a.m. where it was officially seized by local authorities. The vessel is expected to face penalties up to €10 million, although the duration of its detention remains uncertain, pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation. The ship carried a crew of 21 at the time of its seizure. Tankers unable to discharge cargoes in New York region

Jul 06, 2016 08:53

At least two tankers carrying gasoline-making components have dropped anchor off New York for nearly a week, unable to discharge their cargoes in the latest sign that storage for the fuel was running out. Several tankers with gasoline have also been diverted from the New York region to Florida and the U.S. Gulf Coast in recent days. The "Energy Progress" with a cargo of reformate from Aliaga, has been waiting outside New York since June 28, 2016. The "Emerald Shiner", carrying a cargo of alkylite from Sikka, has been anchored off the New York Coast since June 28. Furthermore, at least three cargoes of gasoline from Europe, which heavily relies on exports to the U.S. East Coast, have been diverted in recent days from New York Harbor to Florida and the U.S. Gulf Coast, ship tracking showed. Those include the "Energy Patriot", "Seasalvia" and "Ance". The excess in the midst of summer demand for the motor fuel casts a shadow of the profitability of refineries, and thus their demand for crude oil over the coming months. Global gasoline stocks have risen steadily in recent months as refiners ran at full steam on expectations of strong demand this summer, particularly in the United States and Asia. With dropping profits from producing gasoline, refiners are increasingly shifting to making diesel and jet fuel.
