Chinese container ships transited Strait of Hormuz

Mar 30, 2026 16:15

**Title: Successful Passage of Chinese Container Ships through the Strait of Hormuz** In a significant development for maritime trade, two Chinese container ships, the 'CSCL Indian Ocean' and the 'CSCL Arctic Ocean', successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz on March 30, 2026. This milestone came after the vessels turned back on March 27, following failed attempts to exit the Gulf, despite assurances from Iranian authorities regarding safe passage for Chinese vessels. The ships, operated by China’s COSCO, had been stranded in the Gulf amidst escalating tensions due to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, which began on February 28. Prior to their attempted transit, COSCO had issued a client advisory on March 25, announcing the resumption of bookings for general cargo containers to destinations across the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq. On March 30, the 'CSCL Indian Ocean' crossed the strait at 08:47 a.m. UTC, closely followed by the 'CSCL Arctic Ocean' at 09:14 a.m. Both vessels, currently on COSCO’s MEX service, were bound for Port Klang in Malaysia and displayed detailed AIS information confirming their Chinese ownership and crew. This successful transit not only highlights the resilience of global shipping routes but also signifies a potential easing of the current tensions affecting commercial shipping in the region. It marks the first confirmed passage of a major container carrier through the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict emerged, offering a beacon of hope for maritime operations amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
