FBI requested thorough search

Apr 12, 2026 20:14

**Title: FBI Requests Extensive Search of Detained Cargo Ship 'Nora' in Denmark** In a significant development, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formally requested an in-depth investigation of the cargo ship 'Nora,' which has been moored in Kalundborg, Denmark, since its detention on February 19. The request follows revelations that authorities in Comoros, the ship's country of registration, were completely unaware of 'Nora's' presence while it anchored in Ålbæk Bay. After changing its flag to the Iranian registry, the vessel was compelled to dock at the Port of Aarhus in early March by the National Unit for Serious Crime (NSK) for a thorough inspection. By March 18, 'Nora' departed Aarhus and docked in Kalundborg later that same day. Since then, the ship has been under scrutiny by Danish law enforcement. A police commissioner from NSK shared during morning meetings leading up to Easter that the FBI's request for a search was prompted by suspicions regarding the ship's operations. These meetings, attended by police personnel, port officials, and experts from the Chemical Emergency Response Service, focused on the meticulous examination of 'Nora.' Investigators are conducting a detailed search of the vessel, scrutinizing each container individually. The investigation is particularly pertinent, as both the U.S. and Ukraine have imposed sanctions on the ship. U.S. officials suspect that 'Nora' is linked to an Iranian shadow fleet operated by an individual with connections to the Iranian regime. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities are concerned that the vessel may be involved in transporting weaponry and smuggling stolen assets from regions occupied by Russia. Authorities recognize the possibility of weapons being among the items searched, as they aim to uncover any illicit activities associated with the vessel. The ongoing investigation highlights the complexity of maritime security and international relations, particularly concerning the security implications posed by maritime assets tied to contentious geopolitical dynamics.

Ongoing police operation in association with false flagged container ship

Mar 19, 2026 09:44

**Title: Ongoing Investigation Surrounding Allegedly Misregistered Container Ship** In an intriguing development, a container ship, suspected of fraudulent registration, has recently made headlines following its entry into Kalundborg on March 18. Accompanied by a Danish patrol boat and two tugboats, the vessel underwent extensive searches and a thorough Port State Control (PSC) inspection by the Danish authorities. The Danish Maritime Authority initially encountered the ship under the false pretense of being registered under the flag of Comoros. However, officials from Comoros quickly refuted this claim, confirming that the vessel was not part of their registry. Adding to the mystery, on February 15, the registered owners of the ship were abruptly changed to a company based in Iran. Notably, the vessel declared that it had been sailing under the Iranian flag since February 1. This is not the first instance of suspicious registration; in 2025, the ship previously claimed to be registered in Aruba, suggesting a history of "flag of convenience" practices. Despite the PSC conducted on February 19 being the first of its kind since 2022, no major safety deficiencies were uncovered. However, due to its lack of full certification, the ship remained in detention until the Danish Maritime Authority receives valid registration documentation from an appropriate flag state. Following its initial halt, the vessel was relocated to the port of Aarhus on March 5 for additional inspections before moving to an anchorage off Aarhus on March 9. The situation has attracted the attention of the National Special Crime Unit (NSK), which is actively involved in an ongoing police operation related to the ship's dubious registration history. Previously known as the 'Cerus' until October 2025, the vessel faced significant issues. It had not undergone an inspection since 2022, and its classification was withdrawn by Bureau Veritas in August 2025 due to “Non-compliance with conditions of class / recommendations.” Additionally, the ship has a record of docking at the Russian port of St. Petersburg on multiple occasions, raising further questions about its operations. The unfolding events underscore the complexities involved in maritime regulations and the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat fraudulent shipping practices. As the investigation continues, the fate of the vessel and its true registration status remains uncertain.

Mystery ship left Aarhus

**Title: The Irregular Voyage of the Nora: Departure from Aarhus Port Unveils Ongoing Maritime Mystery** In a recent turn of events, the Iranian-flagged container ship 'Nora' has departed from Aarhus Port, where it had been detained since March 6 for a thorough investigation by the National Unit for Serious Crime. The ship set sail on March 9, 2023, after spending time in scrutiny related to its compliance with international maritime regulations. Once known as 'Cerus,' the vessel, which underwent a name change a few months back, anchored in the picturesque Bay of Aarhus on the morning of March 11, marking its position at 56° 0 N 010° 22 E. This ship first attracted the attention of the Danish Maritime Authority approximately six weeks prior, amid concerns that it had presented misleading information regarding its flag state. At the time, the vessel was flying the Comorian flag while anchored off Aalbæk. However, subsequent investigations revealed that it was not truly registered under that flag with the Comoros ship registry. Adding to the complexity, the 'Nora' has been implicated in sanctions imposed by both the United States and Ukraine, leading to its re-flagging to Iran. The detention was aimed at ensuring that appropriate documentation was confirmed to illustrate that the ship was properly registered and certified by its new flag state. As of now, it remains unclear if the departure from Aarhus signifies that the necessary documentation has been secured. Since its construction in Japan in 2003, the 'Nora' has changed ownership and flag states multiple times, contributing to its enigmatic maritime profile. This latest chapter in its journey continues to raise questions within the international shipping community and underscores the ongoing challenges of maritime regulation and compliance.

Iranian container ship to be inspected in Aarhus

Mar 06, 2026 10:08

**Title: Inspection Planned for Iranian-Flagged Container Ship 'Nira' in Aarhus** In a significant development, Danish authorities are set to inspect the container ship 'Nira' at the APM Container Terminal in Aarhus. The Danish police have verified the ship's origins; however, they have yet to disclose the specific reasons for this impending search. The 'Nira' departed from its anchorage in the Kattegat on March 5, 2023, at 10 a.m. and successfully docked in Aarhus by 8 p.m. This vessel, which is officially registered under the Comoros flag, has drawn attention due to its Iranian affiliations. Previously, the Danish Maritime Authority detained the 'Nira' in February while it was anchored in the northern Kattegat, after arriving from the Russian port of St. Petersburg. Notably, the ship is linked to international sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department and is associated with Reel Shipping LLC, a shipping company reportedly overseen by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani. Adding to the historical context, Shamkhani's father was a prominent advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both family members tragically lost their lives in U.S. and Israeli operations targeting Iran in late February. As investigations proceed, the maritime community will be observing closely, given the implications surrounding international shipping laws and sanctions enforcement.

Sanctioned ship detained by Denmark after several flag changes

Feb 23, 2026 12:43

The Danish Maritime Authority has decided to detain the 'Nora', which has been anchored east of Aalbæk, coming from Basrah, in pos. 57° 36' N 010° 55' E since Jan 23, 2026. The Authority believed that the ship has provided incorrect information about its flag state. The vessel had gone dark while it was in St. Petersburg, Russia, in mid-January and then sailed west into the Baltic and reached Skagen. On Jan 23, it anchored less than 20 miles east of Aalbæk, where it has remained for the past 28 days. A Danish patrol ship was spotted near the vessel along with a Danish Armed Forces sea drone. When the ship dropped anchor,, it did so under the Comorian flag. However, when the Danish Maritime Authority contacted the ship registry in the Comoros, it turned out that the ship was not registered in the African island state. On Feb 11, the ship changed flag agaiin and was now reportedly sailing under the Iranian flag. The Danish Maritime Authority had detained the ship until a flag state has documented that it the 'Nora' hsd nrrm registered and certified with them. In addition, the Danish Maritime Authority planned to carry out a port state inspection on board as soon as weather conditions permitted. The 'Nora' was called 'Cerus' until a few months ago, and is subject to sanctions from both the US and Ukraine. The Americans were believing that the ship was part of an Iranian shadow fleet owned by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, who is the son of one of the clerical regime's top advisors. The Ukrainians was believing that the ship is sailing with weapons and has been used to transport stolen assets from the Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine abroad. The container ship has changed owners and flag states several times since it was built in Japan in 2003. Something was indicating that the ship, regardless of name and flag state, has been Iranian-controlled in recent years, with Iranian officers, which rarely happens without the ship being Iranian-controlled. The 'Cerus' had passed through Danish waters at least 10 times in 2025, as part of frequent trips to St. Petersburg. Each time the vessel has stopped sending position data as it approached Russian waters. The 'Nora' remained stationary as of Feb 23.
