On September 2, 2024, the abandoned vessel 'Caribana Express' successfully reached the port of Vinaròs after departing from Castellón on August 30. This operation was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Port Authority of Castellón, which prioritized the urgent removal of the vessel following a concerning assessment of its condition. A report commissioned by the Maritime Authority, led by PortCastelló’s president Rubén Ibáñez, highlighted that the 'Caribana Express' had lost its Panamanian flag and was at imminent risk of sinking, posing significant threats to both maritime safety and environmental integrity. Consequently, the president initiated the necessary procedures to facilitate the ship's removal, a move that required court authorization via the State Attorney's Office. The court deemed Vinaròs the most appropriate destination due to its proximity and availability of docking facilities. The 'Caribana Express' had been moored at the port of Castellón for over three and a half years. In December 2020, the Maritime Captaincy detained the ship following notable deficiencies during a port state inspection, including poor maintenance practices and crew contract irregularities. Initially docking at Centenario dock, the vessel was later moved to the inner Transversal. A commercial court’s decision led to the preventive seizure and immobilization of the ship, officially declaring it abandoned in November 2022. Currently, the Port Authority of Castellón is working on the final preparations for the auction of the vessel, with a recent appraisal estimating its value at approximately 700,000 euros.
