Working Conditions Aboard the Arda

On the morning of September 30, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Arda', which was navigating from Bandırma to the Russian port of Tuapse, encountered a mechanical failure off the coast of Umuryeri. In response to the emergency, the tugs 'Kurtarma 4' (IMO: 9335941) and 'Kurtarma 6' (IMO: 9463176), along with a strait pilot, were urgently dispatched to provide assistance and successfully took the stricken ship in tow. The 'Arda' was then safely moored at Büyükdere anchorage. This coordinated rescue operation was facilitated by the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center. As a result of this incident, the Bosphorus experienced a temporary blockage in maritime traffic. Fortunately, both northbound and southbound navigation was resumed shortly after the tugs secured the vessel. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has logged a concerning abandonment case involving the vessel ARDA (IMO: 8125155). The ARDA, which flies the Panamanian flag, is currently docked at the port of Unye in Turkiye. This alarming situation has left five seafarers stranded, with outstanding wages owed for the last five months. The crew members consist of individuals from Azerbaijan and Turkiye. The ITF received this report on June 1, 2025, and the case remains open as authorities work to address the plight of the abandoned seafarers. This incident underscores the ongoing issue of crew abandonment that the ITF continuously monitors through its Seafarers Abandonment List.

On November 10, 2021, the cargo ship 'Arda' encountered a technical malfunction while docked at Zonguldak. In response to the incident, the Harbour Master issued a temporary cancellation of the vessel's departure permission. The ship will remain in port until necessary repairs are carried out and a thorough inspection is conducted by a state surveyor to ensure safety standards are met.
