Greenpeace ship joined Global Sumud Flotilla

Apr 22, 2026 11:49

**Title: 'Arctic Sunrise' Joins Global Sumud Flotilla on Mission to Gaza** In a significant show of solidarity, the Greenpeace ship 'Arctic Sunrise' has officially joined the ranks of the Global Sumud Flotilla. This benevolent armada embarked from Barcelona on April 12, 2026, marking its journey with planned stops in Syracuse and Ierapetra. The flotilla includes over 70 vessels and more than 1,000 participants dedicated to challenging the ongoing blockade imposed by Israel, which severely hampers the delivery of essential aid to the Gaza Strip. The 'Arctic Sunrise' is providing critical technical and operational support at sea to facilitate the safe passage of the flotilla across the Mediterranean Sea. This crucial assistance aims to ensure that the participants can complete the final leg of their voyage—approximately 200 nautical miles to the waters off Gaza's coast. “The humanitarian crisis in Gaza represents a dangerous trend of impunity. By participating in this flotilla, Greenpeace is calling for safe and unrestricted access to humanitarian support,” stated Ghiwa Nakat, Secretary-General of Greenpeace MENA (Middle East and North Africa). “This initiative serves as a global plea for governments to uphold international law, ensure the dignity of all individuals, and advocate for justice.” This latest mission follows the previous Sumud flotilla, which set out in September 2025 with 42 boats and 462 participants. Unfortunately, that flotilla was intercepted at sea before it could reach Gaza, with several vessels boarded due to disrupted communications, resulting in participants being taken into custody. As the Global Sumud Flotilla progresses, it highlights the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and the vital importance of international maritime solidarity in the face of adversity.

Crew member died in work accident

Oct 21, 2025 11:24

On oct 20, 2025, a crew member of the "Artistic Sunrise" has died 30 nautical miles off the coast of Malaga, while lowering boats with other colleagues. A total of five ended up falling into the water. The deceased suffered the impact of the boat falling from the vessel. Since then, two separate calls have been made to the Emergency Services to report the incident. The first reported incident was made around 6:00 p.m., shortly after the 'Arctic Sunrise' had departed from the port of Malaga, where it had been docked for several days. Given the seriousness of the crew member's condition, the Helimer helicopter, based in Jerez de la Frontera, and the SAR boat 'Salvamar Alnitak', based in Malaga, were mobilized. Sea conditions, with waves over a meter high, made the rescue difficult. Although the 'Salvamar Alnitak' reached the scene about five minutes before the helicopter, the teams decided to wait for the arrival of the air rescue team, believing that this would save time on transport to a medical center. The victim was hoisted and flown to the Malaga Airport aboard the helicopter, where a specialized team was on hand to attempt to resuscitate the victim. However, he ultimately died. The authorities were investigating the case. The Labour Inspectorate has been mobilized, as has the Occupational Risk Prevention Department.

BP Rig Zigzags in Chase with Greenpeace Ship

Jun 18, 2019 10:34

A BP drilling rig heading to an oilfield in the British North Sea has been forced to turn away twice over the past two days as a Greenpeace vessel protesting climate change tries to hamper its progress. The high-sea chase is the latest step in Greenpeace's nine-day effort to stop the 40,000 tonne Paul Loyd JNR rig from reaching the Vorlich oilfield to start its drilling campaign. The vessel left Cromarty Firth, north of Inverness, Scotland on Friday after police twice removed activists who had climbed and spent several days on one of the rig's legs. But it was forced to turn away twice from its destination over the past 48 hours as Greenpeace's Arctic Sunrise vessel followed it, the activist group said. The Paul Loyd JNR is currently heading west towards Peterhead and away from the Vorlich field, according to Greenpeace and ship tracking websites.

Norway Arrests Greenpeace Ship and 35 Activists During Protest at Arctic Oil Well

Aug 20, 2017 07:27

Norwegian authorities have detained Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise after a protest at a Statoil contracted drilling rig at Norway’s northernmost oil field in the Barents Sea, the environmental group said in a statement. Greenpeace said the vessel and 35 activists were unlawfully detained after entering the exclusion zone of Statoil’s Korpfjell well, halting drilling operations for the Songa Enabler semi-submersible. The ship, activists and crew members were all arrested by the Norwegian Coast Guard, the group said. Greenpeace said it hopes the protest will send a message to the Norwegian government to stop oil drilling in the Arctic. http://gcaptain.com/norway-arrests-greenpeace-ship-and-35-activists-during-protest-at-arctic-oil-well/

Arctic Sunrise sets sail, this time to protest drilling in Norwegian waters

Jul 24, 2017 08:04

The Greenpeace protest ship, the 624-dwt ARCTIC SUNRISE has again set sail, this time from Tromso, Norway to protest oil drilling in Norwegian water having been released from a Russian jail for interfering with drilling operations. "We have no plans to enter the Russian waters. It is on the Norwegian side where the most controversial drilling is planned to take place, and Norway that is the most aggressive Arctic oil player in practical terms," said Truls Gulowsen, head of Greenpeace Norway on his way to do what landed him and his crew in jail in Murmansk. This new venture comes days after the environmental protest group scored a major propaganda victory when an international tribunal in Vienna ordered Russia to pay EUR5 million (US$5.7 million) in damages after it arrested the ship in 2013 for a year and imprisoned its crew for two months.
