Tanker lost crew member over board
**Title: Tragic Overboard Incident on Tanker 'Alfa Baltica' During Storm Dave** On April 5, 2026, a distressing incident occurred aboard the oil tanker 'Alfa Baltica' as it was navigating southwest of Stavanger during Storm Dave. A crew member fell overboard during treacherous weather conditions, prompting urgent rescue efforts. The incident took place around 4:00 p.m., with a Mayday call issued just two minutes later, signaling the start of an intensive search operation. Despite the swift response—including the deployment of a rescue helicopter from the 330 Squadron, assistance from a private Equinor helicopter, and the readiness of a Dutch naval helicopter—the search proved daunting due to the harsh maritime conditions. The nearby offshore vessel 'Havila Phoenix' (IMO: 9407990) adjusted its course to join the rescue efforts, reaching the area within an hour. Unfortunately, the crew member—who was not wearing a life vest—was reported missing. After three hours of extensive searching, the South-West Police District conferred with medical personnel and made the difficult decision to suspend the search at 7:40 p.m., as the likelihood of finding him alive diminished. At the time of the incident, the 'Alfa Baltica' was en route from the Mongstad oil refinery in Norway to Lithuania, located approximately 45 kilometers from the coast. Additionally, the Norwegian Coastguard's patrol ship KV 'Bergen' (IMO: 9389368) was slated to assist, but was hindered by challenging weather conditions miles away. As the rescue operation concluded, the helicopters returned to shore at 6:30 p.m., leaving behind a somber reminder of the dangers that maritime crews face.
