The 'Dana' was hit by GPS spoofing in the Baltic Sea on the night of March 10, 2026. Suddenly, the ship's navigation system showed that the vessel was in the Russian city of Kaliningrad, in fact far from its actual position east of Bornholm. The incident created considerable uncertainty about the ship's precise position. The navigators on board had to use traditional navigation methods instead. Using beacons and paper maps, they managed to determine the ship's real position and continue their work. The incident also created challenges for the electronic position sharing between ships in the area. Over the radio, the crew could hear other vessels calling each other's positions because their systems also showed incorrect data. Despite the disturbances, the crew chose to complete the planned stations, but with notes in the data system that the coordinates could be uncertain.
