Fire on ferry

May 06, 2019 22:39

Ferry services across the Yell Sound were suspended for a time on May 6, 2019, after an engine fire on board the "Daggri". Emergency services were called to the Toft ferry terminal at around midday after the ferry crew discovered the fire shortly after leaving the Toft ferry terminal at around 11.20 a.m. The ferry returned to the berth after the fire had been discovered. The fire was extinguished by the crew of the "Daggri". Passengers and drivers disembarked at Toft and were taken to the nearby ferry waiting room. All passengers and crew were safe and there were no reports of any injuries. Fire appliances from Lerwick, Scalloway and Braewere sent to the scene. An investigation into the cause of the fire on board the "Daggri" took place and repairs to the vessel will be carried out as soon as possible. A shuttle service using the "Fivla" has been in operation since 2.30 p.m., three hours after the incident started. Ferries on the Yell Sound operated on a normal timetable with reduced capacity, using the "Bigga" and "Fivla"; Bluemull Sound operated a single vessel service to a Saturday timetable.
