Cosl-Innovator

Statoil on Mar 4, 2016, terminated the contract with the "COSL Innovator", actually docked in Vindenes, on which a man was killed when a 30 meter high wave hit the living quarters on the rig. The conditions for termination of the contract with COSL Offshore Management AS, was said to have been fulfilled and therefore Statoil chose to terminate the contract. Statoil also has decided to end the ongoing drilling operation with the sister rig "COSL Promoter". Termination of the contract would not affect the long-term work on the Troll field The waves were unusually high in the Troll field on Dec 30, 205. One of waves hit the "COSL Innovator" and smashed 17 windows. Furnishings inside at least six cabins were crushed. A 53 year old Aker Solutions employee, who was in his cabin, was killed. The "COSL Innovator" was originally on a long-term contract with Statoil until summer 2020. In summer 2015 Statoil had already terminated the contract with the third rig, the "COSL Pioneer", 13 months before the contract went out and after the rig had been suspended for some time.

The 53-year-old Rune Morten Narvåg was killed when the "COSL Innivator" was hit by a 14 meter high wave which crushed over the outer wall of his cabin. He died while he was in his own cabin, showed the preliminary investigation of the accident. How this was possible, was not yet clear. The Norwegian authorities were still in the process of investigating the incident in Vindenes.

The "COSL Innovator" after having been hit by a 14-meter wave, arrived off Fedje on Dec 31 at 3 p.m. with 59 offshore workers still on board and 44 having been evacuated, before being transported further to Ågotnes and arriving there in the evening. The two crew members who were injured were hospitalized in Bergen and Florø. They were both out of danger. The Norwegian authorities were now investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. On Jan 1 engineers started inspecting the damage on board the rig. The man who died in the first fatal accident in six years in the Norwegian petroleum industry, was employed by Aker Solutions and lived in Oslo.
