Small fire on aft ship of Cosco Pride off Brunsbuettel - extinguished by crew, no injuries

Jul 13, 2014 11:15

On a container ship a fire broke out early Sunday morning, July 13, 2014 in the Lower Elbe at Brunsbuttel erupted. Even before the arrival of Cuxhaven Seenotretter of the German Society for Sea Rescue (GMRS) the crew had already extinguished the fire. No one was injured and the ship continued its journey towards the open North Sea. In the early morning hours on the container vessel "Cosco Pride" in an open container on the aft ship the fire erupted. Eight specialists from the fire brigade Cuxhaven were taken on board the DGzRS rescue cruiser HERMANN HELMS and rushed to the distressed vessel to help. Even before the rescue crews arrived on site, however, the crew managed to bring the fire under control. In good wind and sea conditions HERMANN HELMS came alongside the 366-meter-long "Cosco Pride" and the firefighters and their equipment were tranfered on the ship, so that they could check whether the fire was extinguished. This was quickly clear so that the "Cosco Pride" could continue their journey towards open North Sea. Whale meat to be sent back to Iceland, Samskip will no longer transport whale products

Jul 12, 2013 10:24

The Icelandic shipping company Samskip will no longer transport whale meat from Iceland to Europe. The whale meat that was left behind in Hamburg after being unloaded from COSCO Pride will be sent back to Iceland. The whale hunting has been going well since June but transporting the meat to its destination in Asia has been more difficult. Greenpeace members protested in Hamburg when a container ship arrived there with whale products from Iceland. The customs ordered that the shipment should be put ashore and examined. When a permit arrived to transport the shipment the ship had already sailed away. Another ship had to be found but then members of Greenpeace tied themselves to the ship. The minister of the environment in Germany also asked the harbour managers to ban all transportation of whale products through German harbours. The shipping company Evergreen Line has decided to return the whale products to Samskip and says that Samskip will transport the containers back to Iceland. Sources say that Samskip will no longer transport whale products from Iceland to Europe. http://www.newsoficeland.com/home/business-economics/private-sector/item/1902-the-whale-meat-will-be-sent-back-to-iceland
