Captain has reached an agreement with the courts
Jondy Ward, the captain of the 'Gert Cornelis', whch had immobilized in Le Havre in October 2021 during post-Brexit tensions over fishing between France and Great Britain, has reached an agreement on a suspended fine with the courts on Aug 9, 2022. He was called to appear for “unauthorized fishing in French waters with a vessel outside the European Union” on July 12 “as part of a procedure on prior recognition of guilt. The President of the Court approved the sentence of 2,000 euros in fine fully accompanied by the suspension on which the defendant and the prosecution had reached an agreement”. The trawler had been suspected of having fished more than two tonnes of scallops without a valid license and was detained in the port of Le Havre for a couple of days as part of tougher controls by French authorities in the Channel, while France was in conflict with the United Kingdom over post-Brexit fishing licenses. The ship finally had able to cast off after a week without having to pay a deposit.
Propeller fouled by rope
The "Cornelis Gert Jan" with a crew of three on board, carrying 16,5 tonnes of shellfish, got a rope stuck around the vessel's propeller, which resulted in the loss of power tothe engine, in position 50 28 56N, 00 10 19E, in the Dover ISS on June 15, 2018, at 11.50 p.m. The trawler was taken in tow to Shoreham by the fishing vessel "Glendeveron". The Shoreham Harbour HAS been informed of the vessel being towed.
Water ingress off Shoreham
The "Cornelis Gert Jan" suffered water ingress after a possible collision with an unknown object on Feb 10, 2018, at 11.17 p.m. in position 49 54.1N, 00 40W. The vessels pumps were holding and no further assistance was required. The Shoreham harbour has been informed and the harbour was taking the vessel. They set up a communication plan with the vessel every hour to ensure the vessels safety an to collect the vessels position and speed. The UK Coastguard was monitoring the vessel until it arrived safely in Shoreham on Feb 11 at 7 a.m. The trawler sailed again from Shoreham on Feb 15 at 10.52 p.m.
