Sailings cancelled due to medical emergency
Scandlines had to cancel two sailings of the 'Copenhagen' on Dec 28, 2022, due to a medical emergency on board. The sailings at 3.45 p.m. from Gedser and at 6 p.m. from Rostock were affected. The ferry finally left Gedser at 8.20 p.m. UTC.
Ferry to be equipped with rotor sail
Sandlines announced that it has signed an agreement with Norsepower to install the company's Rotor Sail Solution onboard the "Copenhagen" which is operating between Rostock and Gedser. The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor – a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to thrust a ship, according to a press release. It is the first data-verified and commercially operational auxiliary wind propulsion technology for the global maritime industry. When wind conditions are favorable, it enables the electric propulsion thrusters and center propel to be throttled back, reducing emissions – while providing the power needed to maintain speed and voyage time. Preparations for the retrofit will take place in November 2019 with the installation scheduled for Q2 2020 as the ship will be retrofitted with one large-sized Norsepower Rotor Sail unit that is 30m in height and 5m in diameter. Scandlines hoped by installing a Rotor Sail to reduce CO2 emissions on the Rostock-Gedser route by four to five per cent.
Scandlines temporarily halts the operation of ferry service from Gedser to Rostock due to Storm Grischa
Storm Grischa on Saturday led to first failures in the ferry connections on the Baltic Sea. The Rostock-Gedser ferry line from the Scandlines temporarily halted the operation on Saturday. The ferry "Copenhagen" remained in Gedser port. The sistership "Berlin" is waiting in Rostock on the ferry terminal to improve the weather. The Scandlines ferries of the Vogelfluglinie as well as the ferries in Kiel and Lübeck still continue on schedule.
