Repair in Busan
The "Colombo Express" docked at Busan on Oct 21, having her damaged forward port side bulwark repaired in the port after the collision with the "Maersk Tanjong". Rudder failure caused collision off Port Said
After the "Colombo Express" contacted the boxship "Maersk Tanjong" while overrunning the latter off Port Said on Sep 29 in the Suez Canal, a hydraulic rudder mechanism was blamed for the accident. When the rudder turned hard to port, the "Colombo Express" veered portside, contacting the "Maersk Tanjong". Both vessels were sailing in southern direction towards Jeddah. Two lost containers have been already recovered. The "Colombo Express" continued its voyage to Jeddah the same evening, closely followed by the "Maersk Tanjong".
Boxship collision off Port Said
The "Colombo Express" has collided with the 332-metre container vessel "Maersk Tanjong" in the Suez Canal off Port Said on Sep 29, 2014, at 5:33 UTC. The "Maersk Colombo" was clearing the Suez Canal Container terminal to join the second convoy, whilst the "Colombo Express" was proceeding through the convoy. It appeared the "Colombo Express" was attempting to overtake the "Maersk Tanjong" and when a left rudder was applied to come back to a parallel course, the rudder when hard to port. The collision resulted in a 20-metre dent to the left side of Colombo Express there were no injuries or pollution as a result of the incident. Three containers were lost over the side from the "Maersk Tanjong", one has been recovered. The second southbound convoy has been interrupted. The container ships were moored at the canal lakes until the investigation and the repairs were completed.
