The attempt to extinguish the fire in the cargo hold of the 'Strait Pearl', filled with scrap metal, with nitrogen appeared to be working on Nov 8. The temperature was dropping and the situation was regarded as stable. There was no danger to the surrounding area. The firefighting units have returned to their stations. The temperature continued to be monitored periodically in the coming period. The specializing company was developing an action plan to definitively extinguish the load later this week and also consulting with the managers of MIRG, the Maritime Incident Response Group of the Zeeland Fire Department. On Nov 7, three fire engines and an aerial platform as well as the Cobra fire extinguishing system, an ultra-high-pressure fire extinguishing system specifically designed for extinguishing fires in enclosed spaces, were on site, after the first two attempts to extinguish the fire with the ship's fire suppression system had failed. Meanwhile, the walls of the hold containing the scrap metal were cooled. Due to the long-term deployment, the firefighting units were partially relieved by the MIRG team, which continuously monitored the temperature to ensure the nitrogen was having the desired effect. The MIRG team had a fire engine and a hooklift container with specialized materials and measuring equipment. The situation has been downgraded to the regular level on Nov 8 at noon. On Nov 7, 2025, at 9 p.m. a fire broke out in the cargo hold of the ' Strait Pearl' in the port of Terneuzen, where it had arrivedon Nov4 enroute from Rotterdam. The fire was raging in a pile of scrap metal in the ship's hold and proved difficult to extinguish. The fire department made two attempts to extinguish the fire, but they were unsuccessful. The decision was made to seal the space where the fire was raging, and extinguish it by introducing nitrogen into the hold, which slowly suffocates the fire. This process was expected to take 24 hours.
