Cielo-Di-Rabat

Apart from the huge investment plan in tanker newbuildings, d’Amico Group of Italy has just added a third containership to the fleet of the fully owned company d’Amico Dry Maroc. The Italian shipping company confirmed to Splash: “The ship renamed Cielo di Rabat has been purchased for some $7m.” The vessel will be deployed on a feeder service linking several South European ports with all the major hubs in Morocco. Former owner of the ship (ex name Santa Giorgina) was the Hamburg-based Santa Giorgina Offen Reederei GmbH & Co.

The "Santa Giorgina" saved 420 migrants between Libya and Malta after having left Al Khoms on Apr 12, 2015. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Rome alterted the ship at noon to assist a distressed boat. Two empty and damaged zodiacs which were located at 2.30 p.m. At 4 p.m. another location was tracked by the MRCC, and the crew of 22 started preparations to take on board migrants. Also a boat of the Guardia di Finanza was on scene which took on board 100 refugees who were then delivered onto the cargo ship. Passengers of another boat panicked when also trying to get on board the "Santa Giorgina", some fell into the water and had to be saved. The migrants were quartered on the aft. When they were served with food in the morning of Apr 13, hostilities broke out among them forcing the crew to interrupt the action for 30 minutes. At 5 p.m. the ship reached Augusta where all castaways were disembarked. At 7.24 p.m. it was notified that two were missing. A search on board was in vain.
