Engine room fire in Wilmington

Nov 26, 2025 23:15

Firefighters were called to the Port of Wilmington, Philadelphia, on Nov 26, 2025, at 9.28 a.m. after a fire broke out in the engine room the 'Chiquita Voyager' after its arrival from Puerto Cortes. Smoke was billowing from the ship’s superstructure, prompting an immediate multi-agency response. Firefighters boarded the vessel to begin suppression operations and evacuate crew members. The fire, which could be confined to the engine room, was aided by the ship’s onboard suppression system that helped contain the flames to their area of origin. Suppression with onboard fire teams proceeded on multiple decks, aided with a water supply from the pier, and the Coast Guard responded to provide support from the water side. At about 10 a.m., the master and the responders decided to evacuate the engine room and release CO2 flooding to extinguish the fire. With all crew members accounted for, the fire team retreated from the compartment and CO2 was released. The crews worked for approximately three hours to bring the fire under control, though fire units remained on scene throughout the day to monitor for potential flare-ups. Four crew members suffered injuries during the fire and were transported to Christiana Hospital by EMS for treatment. The severity of their injuries was not immediately disclosed. The response drew roughly 70 fire and EMS personnel from multiple agencies, including Wilmington Fire Department units, New Castle County EMS, New Castle County Emergency Management, and mutual aid from several New Castle County fire departments.
