Cruise ship turned back to Honolulu for two medevacs
As part of the ongoing AIDA XXL World Cruise 2025/2026, the 'AIDAdiva' began its Pacific crossing from Hawaii to South Korea on Jan 1, 2026. However, two medical emergencies on board necessitated the ship's return to Honolulu. Since the 'AIDAdiva' was not yet far away from Hawaii on the first of its ten sea days, returning there was the obvious choice, so that the patients could be properly transferred to a shore for emergency medical treatment. Due to the distance already covered, however, a helicopter or boat transfer from land was not feasible. The 'AIDAdiva' would not have reached other ports s in its direction of travel for several days, so this option was also ruled out. The patients were disembarked after the tge 'AIDAdiva's arrival in Honolulu and been transferred to local medical care. Their stay there lasted approximately one hour. The ship then resumed its journey and was once again heading towards Busan, South Korea. The return trip to Hawaii affects the 'AIDAdiva's itinerary. Originally, the ship was scheduled to arrive in Busan on the evening of Jan 11, 2026, and remain there until 6:00 p.m. the following day. However, the arrival had to be postponed to Jan 12, eliminating the overnight stay in Busan and thus shortening the ship's time in port. The regular itinerary was then to be resumed. During its current world cruise, the AIDAdiva was therefore in the port of Honolulu on Oahu in Hawaii three times – on Dec 26, 2025, for a technical stop, for the turn of the year (Dec 31, 2025/Jan 1, 2026) and for the emergency medical disembarkation on Jan 2.
Norovirus outbreak on world cruise
The 'AIDAdiva', currently on a world cruise, experienced a norovirus outbreak on board, according to a statement released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Dec 4, 2025. The outbreak was reported to US authorities on Nov 30. By that time, the 'AIDAdiva' had already left the ports on the East Coast of North America. The CDC apparently still needed to be informed because the cruise included further US ports of call. According to the official statement, 95 of 2,007 guests (4.8 %) and six of 640 crew members (0.9 %) fell ill. They exhibited symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, for which norovirus was identified as the causative agent. The reported cases pertained to the entire voyage, meaning that not all passengers were ill simultaneously. The further spread of the virus was now to be prevented by intensifying hygiene and health protection measures, which AIDA Cruises has already implemented. On board the 'AIDAdiva', enhanced cleaning and disinfection measures were in place in accordance with the outbreak prevention and response plan. Passengers with gastrointestinal illnesses are being examined and tested for norovirus. Sick passengers and crew members are being isolated. Regarding hygiene measures and the reporting of cases of illness, AIDA Cruises was in close contact with the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program, which was monitoring the situation remotely.
