Container ship struck by drifting Maersk vessel
On Jan 24, 2019, at 1.35 p.m. the container ship "Maersk Sheerness" broke lose from its moorings at the Lucca Quay in the port of Livorno in ENE winds of 35 knots and broke out a bollard. The ship drifted to the opposite dock, the Massa quay and hit the berthed "Chacabuco", with its stern. The container ship managed to get back to its berth with the help of three tugs, but nevertheless broke lose again, breaking out another bollard, this time at the bow. Eventually the wind dropped and the ship could finally be secured at its berth again at 3.20 p.m. The ship left the port again on Jan 25 at 9 a.m., bound to Genova, where it was expected in the evening hours. Also the "Chacabuco" sailed from Livorno to Genova on Jan 25 at 7.30 a.m. and arrived at 1.40 p.m.
