Christiania Gas working to get nine captured crew members released
The shipping company Christiania Gas was working to get the nine abducted seafarers from the 'CGAS Saturn' released and confirmed that one injured seafarerwas being treated in a hospital in West Africa. The LPG tanker is part of the CGas fleet that Christiania Shipping took over in 2023 under technical operation by Hartmann Gas Carriers Germany GmbH. Christiania Gas continued to work to establish contact with the people who were holding the crew members as hostages after it was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea on Dec 3. The goal was to have the seafarers released safely and as quickly as possible. The tanker remained moored off Libreville in pos. 00° 17' N 009° 30' E since Dec 4.
At least nin crew members kidnapped in Gulf of Guinea
On the early morning of Dec 1, 2025, the 'CGas Saturn'; enroute to Malabo, has been attacked by pirates off Equatorial Guinea, with at least nine crew members having been kidnapped. The tanker was boarded around 50 nautical miles west of Mbini, while sailing toward Malabo. Four crew members were left on board, with one being injured, presumably by a stray bullet. The vessel has proceeded to safe waters and was alongside in Malabo´on Dec 3, where authorities were assessing the situation and gathering further information from the remaining crew. The owner company stated: “Christiania Gas is deeply concerned about the attack on its ship and seafarers. The company's highest priority is now to establish contact with the missing crew members to ensure their fastest possible and safe release. The emergency response team is cooperating with all relevant authorities, who were notified immediately after the incident. The company is in close contact with the families of the seafarers to support them during this extremely difficult time.” Past cases of piracy involvined vessels such as the 'Nave Constellation', 'Davide B', 'Monjasa Reformer', 'Hana I' and the 'Bitu River'. Between Jan and Sep 2025, 15 maritime security incidents were recorded in the region, up from 12 in the same period last year. Ten of these took place inside territorial waters, being classed as armed robbery, with the remaining five categorised as piracy. 14 crew members were kidnapped in the first nine months of 2025.
