A search was launched after a passenger went overboard from the ' Carnival Splendor' near Brisbane, while the ship was sailing from Moreton Island towards Sydney. The vessel was on a four-day, round-trip sailing set to return on April 19. The man in his 70s fell from the ship about 30 kilometres northeast of Moreton Island on the night of April 17, 2026, after he apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped. The man was travelling with family who alerted the ship’s crew about a missing person. A review of the CCTV footage confirmed the action. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) began an intensive air and sea search involving multiple assets,” ollowing the initial report. The AMSA coordinated the SAR operation and has tasked its Cairns and Melbourne-based Challenger jets, five rescue helicopters from around the metropolitan Brisbane area, and six surface vessels into the area, with Queensland Police assisting the AMSA with the operation. Carnival assisted authorities in their investigation upon the ship’s return to Sydney. Carnival’s Care Team was supporting the guest’s family. The 'Carnival Splendor' left the area on April 19 at around 3 p.m. LT and arrived in Sydney around 6 p.m. A text from Carnival sent to passengers on the subsequent Splendor sailing departing April 19 said that check-in and embarkation for the cruise would be delayed. A 67-year-old Australian woman of the same ship had died while snorkelling off Moreton Island on April 17. The Tasmanian woman was found unresponsive in the water on the morning, just hours before the man went overboard. Attempts were made to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no suggestions that the two events are in any way connected. The Queensland Police confirmed on April 21 that they had suspended the search, which had deployed multiple emergency services to try locate the man.

The 'Carnival Splendor's crew have rescued four people, including two Australians, bloggers with a YouTube page called Sailing Barking Cat, stranded on the disabled catamaran 'LA Vita' off the coast of New Caledonia on May 22, 2025. The cruise ship was alerted by the MRCC in Noumea, of the boat's distress call at about midnight, After sailing the coast of Australia, the couple were heading to Fiji, with two French bulldogs and a mini husky in tow. Joined by another couple, a German and an Italian, they set off on May 14, but their engine failed and the mast broke in bad weather, leaving them adrift at sea at night. The cruise ship headed to the location and rescued them within five hours. They got food, water and medical assistance. The 'Carnival Splendor' had left Sydney on May 19 on an eight-day round trip cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The rescued sailors were dropped off in Noumea. An ill passenger had to be medevaced from the 'Carnival Splendor' off the coast of Seal Rocks in the night of Dec 15, 2022, en route from Sydney to Moreton. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in deteriorating weather to the cruise ship 30 kilometres off the coast. The chopper’s Critical Care Paramedic was winched onto the ship to stabilise the man who was then hoisted from the ship into the helicopter. The "Carnival Splendor" had to remain in the port of Los Angeles due to an engine issue. As a result, one scheduled port of call has already been canceled. The cruise line is sending out a special technician to help in the repairs. The ship was originally scheduled to depart on its 7-day cruise on May 25, 2019. The ship has moved away from the pier at 5 a.m. and was now anchored in the port to make way for the "Carnival Imagination"’s arrival after ending its 3-day cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. The crew was providing a full entertainment schedule and all operations onboard were running as normal. The plan was to operate a two port itinerary to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. Given the delay, it was necessary to cancel the visit to Mazatlan. The guests will receive a US$50.00, per person, credit to their Sail & Sign account. Additionally, any taxes, fees and port expenses and pre-purchased shore excursions for Mazatlan were refunded to the Sail & Sign account. Shore excursions for Cabo San Lucas will be adjusted to the new day in port. The ship finally sailed on May 26 around midnight with an ETA at Cabo San Lucas as of May 28, 6 p.m.
