The Coast Guard medevaced three Canadian sailors from a sailing vessel approximately 200 miles southeast of Cape Fear on OCt 21, 2016. Sector North Carolina watchstanders were notified by the Rescue Coordination Center at approximately 2:50 p.m. on Oct 20 of three men who needed to be medevaced form the 40-foot sailing vessel "Juste Ciel" after the vessel became beset by weather. The French Canadian crew members fell ill and were reportedly suffering from dehydration and physical exhaustion. The "Privsea", an Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER), took the sailing vessel in tow and headed northwest to shorten the distance for the medevac. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched a C-130 and an MH-60 helicopter crew to assist. The helicopter crew flew approximately 200 miles offshore, refueled aboard the USS Mesa Verde and proceeded to the sailing vessel. The helicopter crew hoisted the three men and transported them to Air Station Elizabeth City where they were transferred to local EMS was personnel. As Defence Web reports, the Dutch naval vessel HNLMS Evertsen has captured seven pirates aboard a dhow and rescued seven pirated crewmembers. The pirates are believed to be responsible for unsuccessfully attacking the Turksih bulk carrier MV Namrun. The Namrun was attacked by Somali pirates on June 27 whilst underway in the Arabian Sea, approximately 110 nautical miles north of Socotra. The pirates were aboard a dhow and as it approached the bulk carrier, two pirates hiding under a blanket appeared with weapons in hand and proceeded to fire on the ship with rocket propelled grenades and small arms. The armed private security guards on board the Namrun returned the fire causing the pirates to break off the engagement and move away. There were no injuries to personnel on board the ship, but it is reported that three pirates may have been killed during the exchange.
