Cruise ship drifted off Rhodes
On the morning of Dec 5, 2025, the Rhodes Port Authority was informed, that the 'Blue Sapphire' with 49 crew members on board, without passengers, during its passage from the port of Rhodes to a safe anchorage, had broken lose from the tug towing it due to the adverse weather conditions prevailing in the area. The tugs 'Kaptain Dimitrios'' (IMO: 9825348) and 'Minotavros A' (IMO: 8814873) were deployed to assist. The cruise ship sailed safely to the anchorage of Ialyssos Bay, where it remained until the weather conditions had improved. A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Central Port Authority of Rhodes. The 'Blue Sapphire' returned to the port of Rhodes on Dec 7, where it remained stationary as of Dec 10. Cruise ship sold and renamed
Saga Cruises has completed the sale of the 'Saga Sapphire' to Anex Tour, a family-run Turkish tour operator. The ship was renamed 'Blue Sapphire' and was scheduled to reenter service as Blue Sapphire operating for Anex Tour’s new cruise line in 2021. Anex Tour had announced in August 2019 it would acquire the vessel which was now getting prepared to sail in the eastern Mediterranean after a thorough renovation.
