Engine repairs in Emden completed

Oct 28, 2025 09:36

The technical malfunction aboard the 'BG Ireland' has forced the ship to make an unscheduled stop at the shipyard Emder Werft und Dock GmbH (EWD) in Emden, has been resolved. The issue was traced to a broken connecting rod bolt, which damaged the ship's MAK 9-cylinder 4-stroke engine. EWD engineers fully dismantled the old engine block, salvaging reusable parts. A new, 120-ton MAK engine was delivered to Emden and installed with the help of a floating crane—a rare and challenging operation according to project engineer Dennis König. Over the next three weeks, the ship's piping and coupling systems will be reinstalled, followed by a test phase since Oct 23. On Oct 26 at 10.40 p.m. the ship finally left Emden, next destined to Grangemouth with an ETA as of Oct 29.
