Ferry adrift off Iceland
The 'Baldur', serving the route between Stykkisholmur and Breiðafjörður, broke down in the morning of March 11, 2021, in the Denmark Bay in Western Iceland, while en route to Stykkisholmur. She went adrift in western direction in rough weather conditions. The fishing support vessel 'Árni Friðriksson' (IMO: 9192404) responded and initially took the disabled ferry in tow. At 10 p.m. she was joined by Icelandic Coast Guard vessel 'Thor'. The ferry was to be towed to Stykkishólmur once the weather permits. The Coast Guard's helicopter squadron has been in a state of emergency in Stykkishólmur and offered to ferry the passengers ashore in evening, but everyone choae to stay on board the ferry. The tug 'Phoenix' (IMO: 9793155) took over the tow in the night. The 'Björgin', the rescue ship of the Landsbjörg Accident Prevention Association, has also been mobilized. As of March 12 at 11 a.m., the 'Baldur' was held in position 65° 10.91' N 022° 58.66' W. She finally docked in Stykkishólmur at 7 p.m. on March 12. The 20 passengers and eight crew members had been on board for more than a day instead of the scheduled three-hour trip across the bay. The Coastguard patrol ship 'Thor' took the 'Baldur' in tow and pulled it towards Stykkishólmur, where the tug Phönix' took over, assisting the ferry to the quay.
